This book is a must for all anesthesiology residents.

Every anesthesiology resident should run, not walk, to purchase this book. It is concise, very readable, and can be used as the primary reference for the cardiac anesthesia rotations. To date I have yet to find a significant omission. Do your self a favor and buy this book!

finally a good one

A Practical Approach to Cardiac Anesthesia 3rd edition was a required text for me. However, I was delighted to discover its readability. Information is well organized and concise, yet packed w/ as much detail as you can take. I was greatful to not have to rake thru "fluff" in search of useful, comprehensible information. Good for any health professional interested in cardiac surgery and anesthesia.

Essential Book for Cardiac Anesthesia Practitioner

During our clinical practice in a teaching hospital in Istanbul, Turkey; I found the previous editions of this book very useful. I ordered my first book from [...] to receive the 2008 edition in January 2008. I have done a correct decision. This is an up-to-date, valuable practical book for Cardiac Anesthesiologist; as well as for residents who recently start to learn Cardiac Anesthesia. The tables provide excellent documentation for the use of different cardiac drugs and also some tables serve to differentiate different situations that has to be dealt in complex heart surgical operations. I would like to thank very much to the Editors for providing such a wonderful book to Anesthesia Society all over the world. Our goal is to translate it to Turkish in a short period of time.

The book itself is fine however, the title explicitly states that the Kindle ...

The book itself is fine however, the title explicitly states that the Kindle version comes with an access code to the Navigate 2 Essentials site. After extensively searching the book and contacting Amazon I was informed that the Kindle version does not have an access code despite falsely being advertised and sold with the impression that this would be included. If you buy the Kindle version just be aware that you will not gain access to the Navigate 2 Essentials site and will have to find an alternate means to an access code.

Thick with knowledge

I'm currently taking an EMT course and this is definitely the handbook of it all. If you buy the new version, there's an online access code in the back cover that gives you access to online quizzes, summaries, outlined, audio book, etc. for 1year :) Definitely handy for reviewing when you're driving and also when you want to test yourself on the material. The book can also be a paper holder for strong winds and kill spiders, or knock someone down if this was thrown at them (it's thick with knowledge). 0_0

Not satisfied at all.

UPDATE: This book DOES come with an access code. HOWEVER, you need to confirm what access code you NEED first. This text book comes with ESSENTIALS access, not ADVANTAGE, PREFERRED or PREMIER. Many EMS classes require PREMIER so you need to make sure you are purchasing what you need.

I originally rated this 5 stars. However, I'm changing it to 1. This whole access code nonsense is very deceptive, especially when many people believe it is what they need when it says "Essentials."

About the Author

Lorenzo Morello received his degree in Mechanical Automotive Engineering in 1968 at the Politecnico of Turin. He immediately began his career at the Politecnico as Assistant of Machine Design and Technologies.

Leaving the Politecnico in 1971, went to work at a branch of Fiat dedicated to vehicle studies, one that has been joined to the new Research Centre in 1976. He participates in the development of cars and experimental prototypes for the ESV US Program. He has also developed mathematical models for vehicle suspensions and road holding simulations.

Since 1973 he has been involved in a major project for the development of mathematical modeIs of the vehicle, to address the product policies of the company in facing the first energy crisis; as part of this activity he began the development of a new automatic transmission for reduced fuel consumption and a small direct injection diesel engine to be used on automobiles.

Dr. Morello was appointed manager of the chassis department of the Vehicle Research Unit and has coordinated the development of many research prototypes, such as electric cars, off-road vehicles, trucks and buses. He was appointed manager of the same Research Unit in 1977 and has been leading a group of about 100 design engineers, dedicated to the development of prototypes. A new urban bus with unitized thin steel sheet body, with spot welded joints, a commercial vehicle that will start production later, a small lightweight urban car, under contract from the National Research Council, and a hybrid car, under contract from the US Department of Energy, were developed in this period of time.

He took responsibility of the Engine Research Unit in 1980; this group, of about 200 people, was primarily dedicated to the development of new car engines. He has managed the development of many petrol engines according to the principle of high turbulence fast combustion. A direct injection diesel engine for cars, many turbocharged pre-chamber diesel engines, a modular two cylinder car engine and many other modified prototypes. He was appointed Director of Product Development in 1983; this position includes all applied research activities on Vehicle Products of Fiat Group. The Division included about 400 people, addressed to power train, chassis and bodies studies as well as prototype construction.

Dr. Morello joined Fiat Auto in 1983, to take responsibility for the development of new automotive petrol engines and the direct injection diesel (the first in the world for automobile applications). He was appointed Director for Powertrain Engineering in 1987; the objective of this group was to develop all engines produced by Fiat Auto brands. The most important activity in this period was the development of the new engine family to be produced in Pratola Serra, which included more than 20 different engines.

At the end of his career, he returned to vehicle development in 1994, as director for Vehicle Engineering; this group was addressed to designing and testing bodies, chassis components, electric and electronic systems, wind tunnels, safety center and other facilities.

Dr. Morello retired in 1999 and started a new activity as consultant to the strategic planning of Elasis, a new company in the Fiat Group, entirely dedicated to vehicle applied research.

Along with Fiat Research Center he participated in the planning of courses for the new Faculty on Automotive Engineering of the Politecnico of Turin, and prepared related lecture notes. He was contract professor of Vehicle System Design and has been contract professor of Automotive Transmission Design since 2001 at the Politecnico of Turin and the University of Naples.

An unacknowledged gem!

This must be one of the funniest books I've ever read--I hadn't laughed out loud like this since Catch-22. The character of Miss Marjoribanks (that's pronounced "Marchbanks") is used by Oliphant both as a vehicle for social satire in the Victorian community and as an instrument to examine female modes of power in the Victorian home. The scene in which Miss Marjoribanks figuratively usurps her father's role as patriarch of the house by appropriating his place at the breakfast table is hilarious. Oliphant's book is wonderfully enjoyable and furtively serious--it may be light in tone, but it reveals a great deal about how a resourceful Victorian woman might seek modes and expressions of power within parameters that are very limiting.

The main character of Miss Marjoribanks is not intended to "grow" or "develop"--part of the pleasure of her characterization and her story is in witnessing how her single-minded mania as social director of her community compells her to overcome the obstacles thrown in her way by the novel's narrative. Why should we arbitrarily expose this book to aesthetic standards created by a handful of canonical novels? Miss Marjoribanks's characterization is as valid as any found in Austen or Trollope (though not necessarily as great as the best of them)--we must keep in mind that there was much more to Victorian fiction than what is revealed in the small quantity of canonized examples still read today. Oliphant was immensely popular in her day, she was Queen Victoria's favorite writer, and there were many contemporary critics who considered her to be one of the best novelists of that period.

In short, Oliphant's Miss Marjoribanks is a comic masterpiece, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to any reader of 19th-century British fiction.

Funny and fetching

If you were to cross Jane Austen's Emma Woodhouse with E. F. Benson's Lucia, the result (psychologically as well as chronologically) would be Margaret Oliphant's triumphant queen of Carlingford society, Lucilla Marjoribanks. Determined to show everyone an entertaining time (ostensibly "to be a comfort to dear Papa," even though her father tends to withdraw entirely from her noisy gatherings), the self-centered but always ingenious Lucilla engineers social triumph after social triumph in this very amusing mid-Victorian novel. There were many moments when I laughed out loud, or was genuinely surprised by Lucilla's cleverness in overcoming momentary catastrophes. This is the perfect book for anyone who has loved Austen, Trollope, or Elzabeth Gaskell's WIVES AND DAUGHTERS.

An absolute delight!

What a great find, and refreshing as it lacks much of the high melodrama so common in most 19th century literature. Miss Lucilla Marjoribanks comes home from school determined to be a comfort to dear papa and sets the good doctor and the entire town on their ears, with her brilliant manipulations.

The characters are wonderful, the story has lots of ups and downs that Lucilla is always capable of meeting with great ingenuity and fortitude. There are many wonderful moments and lots of laughter along with a few tears. Higly recommended, particularly for anyone who enjoys 19th century English literature.

Being a non-finance person, I felt like reading a very interesting storybook while understanding the bank credit risk concepts and tools in a very layman and lucid type language written by the author. Comprehensive yet crisp. Keep writing sir. We want more of these kind of excellent narration of the intricacies of the financial world.

Po Bronson is the author of the brilliant bestseller What Should I Do with My Life?, the powerful and poignant Why Do I Love These People?, a hilarious novel called The Bombadiers, and The Nudist on the Late Shift, a collection of "true stories" about Silicon Valley.

When we tell family stories, we so often focus on the beginning and the end. The beginning is the two decades of our childhood and adolescence, and it's been the favorite narrative arc ever since Freud. What happens in your childhood does not stay in your childhood--it haunts the rest of your life. In the last decade, we've suddenly heard more stories of the end--narratives constructed around a parent's death, and often the year spent caring for that parent on their deathbed.

Because these are the conventional narratives, they often distract our attention from the many decades in between. We barely even have a terminology for these years--and the terms we employ sound like oxymorons: "Adult Children," "Parents of Adults." There's an old saying: you can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family. In the beginning this is true--we're in the care of our parents, like it or not. And in the ending this is also true--they're in our care, like it or not. But in the long middle, this isn't so true. The middle is a period where both child and parent can keep their distance, if they prefer. And often do, harboring resentment. We too often accept that this is just the way it is. "She's never going to change" is a common, fatalist refrain.

In Walking on Eggshells, Jane Isay shines a much-needed light on these years. With a graceful respect for the families she investigates, she tells their stories--how they lost their love, and how they regained it. Isay covers the many ways families develop resentment, and the many techniques they employed to make peace. She shows that small changes in routine can go a long way to restoring goodwill. But it's not a self-help book; it's more of a literary contemplation, and we learn more by inspiration than by emulation.

Starred Review. As baby boomer parents age, they're discovering the empty-nest syndrome is nothing compared to what happens when their kids graduate from college and start leading lives of their own. To a generation famous for being involved in every aspect of their children's lives, it can be upsetting to find that those children no longer need or welcome your advice. How does one parent children who no longer need parenting? Publishing veteran Isay, an editor and mother of two grown sons, interviews scores of parents and adult children of all ages to see how they are doing it. The stories are heartwarming, and Isay recounts them with intelligence and compassion. What does she find? Nothing Ann Landers hasn't already told us. Mainly: don't give advice; make friends with your children's significant others; and remember that love heals. The most compelling story is Isay's own. One wishes it were the centerpiece of the book rather than tacked on as an epilogue. Her experience is an example of her most interesting discovery: children are quick to forgive and often the ones who take the initiative in forging a new brand of closeness between themselves and their parents—a closeness that is best described as adult. Happy with Purchase

I ordered the book on March 31 and received it on April 6, so it arrived in a timely fashion. The book appeared to be brand new from the outside. The dust cover showed no wear and the book felt new. A week or so after receiving the book I finally opened it to read it and discovered green highlighting throughout the book. The highlighting is obviously on passages that spoke to the previous reader, but kind of takes away from the statement that the book was 'new'. Am I upset? No, some of the passages that are highlighted speak to me too. Would I have bought the book if I had known there was highlighting in it beforehand? No, because I wouldn't have known the extent of the highlighting. So I am giving it 4 stars, but I'm not unhappy with the purchase.
Responding to the contents of the book: This book is about having a positive relationship with your grown children - say 25 years and older, possibly out of college and living on their own, but possibly still living with you. Jane Isay has compiled a number of stories to illustrate different ways parents of children have coped with their children growing up and 'distancing' themselves from their roots to gain autonomy. It could speak to you as being the 'grown child' if your parents are still living or as being the 'parent' of grown children. For parents who are new to this experience, it is a painful ripping apart of your soul as you try to navigate staying in touch with your children without allowing yourself to be their doormat and disrespected beyond all reason. Hurt feelings, miscommunications, misunderstood motives abound. I'm a fourth of the way through the book. At the end of the chapters the author has summarized the points she is making. So far they are uplifting like her comment that she was surprised to find it just takes little changes to improve the relationship with grown children. (This was one of the green highlighted parts of my book.) The stories illustrate examples of 'little changes.' It's a reasonable read and positive. I was referred to the book by a client of mine who has recognized him and his wife in some of the stories and that is helping them make 'little changes' to have a better relationship with their grown child who lives in another country - the ultimate in distancing.

Excellent for Any Family

This author helps families handle and understand "normal" issues between parents and adult children. What I love most is that there is no blame here, just an understanding and helpful information that can stop or defuse a situation from getting out of control. It's helpful to know that all families have some issues, it's normal, and that it's never too late to make things better.
