Kalasha is a language spoken by three thousand speakers in the three Kalash Valleys of Bumboret, Birir and Rumbur in Chitral, Pakistan. Kalasha is also spoken by an estimated eight hundred people in the nearby former Kalash Valleys of Urtsun and Jinjoret. Those people have been reported to all be converted to Islam, but they still speak Kalasha in their homes. Gul Sharakat who has been conducting her own research by interviewing Kalasha speakers throughout Pakistan estimates there are fifteen thousand Kalasha speakers altogether. It is known that Kalasha is an old language, definitely two thousand years old and probably four thousand years old. Georg Morgenstierne says in his books that Kalasha has been spoken “for thousands of years.” Morgenstierne describes them as “among the first wave of Indo-Aryan Immigrants”. Rudyard Kipling wrote in “The Man Who Would Be King” “These women are whiter than you or me. . . . It's a mountainous country, and the women of those parts are very beautiful." These people are said to be descendants of the soldiers of Alexander the Great.

About the Author
Georg Morgenstierne was a Norwegian Linguist, one of the last of the old school of Linguists. He was associated with the University of Oslo in Norway and today there is Georg Morgenstierne's house in his honor located at Blindernveien 31, entr. From Moltke Moes vei. Morgenstierne was born in 2 January 1892 in Oslo, Norway. In 1924, he undertook the first of his two major linguistic expeditions. He arrived in Kabul with a personal letter of introduction to King Amanullah of Afghanistan from the King of Norway for permission to conduct his linguistic researches. The importance of this letter cannot be underestimated. Afghans have long been paranoid, xenophobic and suspicious of outsiders. An adventurer who undertakes to travel into the remote tribal areas of Afghanistan has virtually guaranteed himself a short life. King Amanullah had prisoners brought from the jails of Kabul to Morgenstierne so that he could interview them and learn about their languages. In this way he was able to learn about many languages spoken in Afghanistan plus he was able to learn about the Khowar Language which was spoken in Chitral on what is now the Pakistan side of the border. In 1929, Morgenstierne wished to return to Kabul to continue his research but he could not do so because by then King Amanullah had been overthrown. Therefore, Morgenstierne went to what is now the Pakistan side of the border after which he wrote another book, Report on a Linguistic Mission to North-Western India ISBN 0923891145. Morgenstierne took extensive notes and after these two visits he spent the next nearly 50 years of his life studying his notes and researching the languages he had studied there. Morgenstierne died in Oslo on 3 March 1978 with a manuscript in Khowar on his desk that he had been researching at the time of his death.

This is a handbook for activists wanting to defend and promote (well!) Enlightened values

The Enlightenment period of history of course is the immediate antecedent to the advanced civilisation of the West that we know today. It's antecedents in turn were of course the Renaissance, the transfer back to the West of ancient Greek philosophy and science by the Arabs following the dark ages and following on, as a result of this Arabic transference, our knowledge of the thinking of the ancient Greeks. That is as it happened. Of course if the world tape of history could be rewound and re-run things could have turned out very differently.

If we take George Santayana's aphorism, "Those who do not know history's mistakes are doomed to repeat them" as a maxim, this book is an excellent way to get into this period of history to help ourselves avoid falling into that Santayana syndrome. This book is one of many beginners guide books which covers a wide variety of topics including democracy, french revolution, postmodernism - picking three at random. Reading this book was very stimulating for me because while I have read individual authors from that period, roughly 1688 - 1795, such as Spinoza, Hume and Kant, this book gives an overview of those and many others all in one sweep! The author describes to some extent how they interacted with each other and battled the authorities thus explaining how the Enlightenment values we know today were hammered out and honed. The book shows the Enlightenment is an ongoing human "project" and in many spots there is the phrase "...and still is today" following some debate or dispute or idea or outcome of these.

A confluence of achievement and events and general revulsion by people generally sick of the Thirty Years war in Germany, prompting the leading question, is there a better way to solve human problems than endless killing each other was a big factor in getting the Enlightenment project going. The world has too often forgotten the Santayana object lessons of that period and fallen into attempting to solve problems by killing each other! There was the French Revolution itself which ended the Enlightenment period but since that time there were amongst many many other failures to learn from history: the whole colonial period where cherry picking of Enlightenment achievement/values happened big time, the first and second world wars... By "cherry picking" I mean that the Enlightenment lead to modern science and technology which enabled/magnified people's ability to project physical power which was so often and appallingly exploited with complete disregard to the other maxims and injunctions that was also part and parcel of Enlightenment values. The deep resentment of many in the third world of today, which troubles the West in a great many ways, is a direct consequence of this cherry picking. Similar cherry picking happens today. A most insidious example are certain media moguls cry "freedom of speech" when regulators want to control what they unfairly publish yet on the other side of the equation where they are obliged, by the contraints of civil society, to make their case fairly and truthfully they walk all over them by many spin tactics! Yet it's that ignoring of civil society constraints which prompts government to countenance regulation in the first place. If too many in society keeps cherry picking Enlightenment values the whole quality of society which the Enlightenment has achieved can be destroyed!

Kieron O'Hara as a person is especially interesting to me, with a similar background but much lower profile, and makes me rather envious of his achievements in being selected to write this book. His day job is as an electrical engineer, a deeply technical field yet he has overcome CP Snow's Two Cultures syndrome and is immensely well read in this non-technical field in the humanities.

Very good overview of the Enlightenment Era

The author does a good, objective job of covering all the aspects of the 18th century Age of Reason--Its defining characteristics, its effects on different areas of life (art, politics, science, religion, etc.), and (in detail) its philosophy. He perhaps assumes a too-literate reader; I found myself often researching on the Internet such topics as the French Revolution or an individual philosopher. But his goal is not really to detail the history but to explicate the way that each event was influenced by Enlightenment thinking--A very interesting and cohesive approach. To me, the weakest area was the Chapter on the Enlightenment's legacy; it is so theoretical and so emphasizes modern problems that it was less helpful than I wanted for understanding the history. It was, however, thoughtful and logically defensible. In sum, I'd recommend this book as an overview for anyone relatively unfamiliar with the Enlightenment and what it meant (and means today).

As a Kindle book, it is clean, with no errors and with a linkable Table of Contents. Searching the book is simple. But note well: No page numbers are available! If that matters to you, you are stuck!

I bought this one after reading "Astrologically Incorrect for Lover's" expecting it to be as good or at least as funny. Unfortunately it is not. I had a good laugh at the Aries section with my Aries friend as it was very accurate but it provided no more information than I've seen elsewhere. The other signs fall flat in this book as the author tends to dwell on only one characteristic of each sign. The title of this makes it sound like a much more stimulating read than it actually is. The follow-up "...for Lover's" is much better. I would also recommend the "Darkside Zodiac" as it is more interesting and very funny.

THIS BOOK WAS DEAD ON RIGHT.... HITS RIGHT ON THE TIP OF THE NOSE.... HITS RIGHT AT HOME... SO RIGHT I GOT A LITTLE SPOOKED... ITS LIKE IT COULD SEE RIGHT INTO MY BRAIN IT KNOWS EXACTLY HOW EACH SIGHN REACTS AND THINKS AND SO ON... I SAY "READ IT"!!!!! I REALLY DO... JUST AS LONG AS YOU ARE A BELIEVER LIKE ME

About the Author

Patrick Cozzi is a senior software developer on the 3D team at Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI). He is a contributor to SIGGRAPH and the Game Engine Gems series. Before joining AGI, he worked on storage systems in IBM’s Extreme Blue internship program at the Almaden Research Lab, interned with IBM’s z/VM operating system team, and interned with the chipset validation group at Intel. He earned a master’s degree in computer and information science from the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Pennsylvania State University.

Kevin Ring is the lead architect of AGI Components at Analytical Graphics, Inc. In his software development career, he has worked on a wide range of software systems, from class libraries to web applications to 3D game engines to interplanetary spacecraft trajectory design systems. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Wow! These guys know their stuff!

If you don't want to read my short novel below, just buy the book!

As a lifelong amateur astronomer and software engineer, with 3D graphics simulation being my hobby, I always wanted to write a 3D simulation allowing a user to fly around the solar system and buzz the canyons of our rocky planets or navigate through the rings of Saturn.

But even with many years of OpenGL programming, I had no idea how to achieve what I have conceived in my head (check out the Outtera website to get an idea, absolutely stunning!).

3D Engine Design for Virtual Globes is just what I needed. The book presents a complete API for rendering globes, massive amounts of terrain, vector data (GIS) and the techniques required for a seamless and smooth transition from orbit down to your front yard.

The API is called OpenGlobe and it is built on top of OpenTK which facilitates writing OpenGL programs with C#/.Net (yeah!).

To end on a good note, I’ll mention the con’s first:

I can’t praise this book enough for finally making this topic clear to me. With that said, be forewarned: The OpenGlobe API is not a plug-n-play solar system/planetary simulator. Literally all of the example programs demonstrate their purpose in isolation to the example. For example, the globe rendering examples render a single globe in its own space. If you want to render several planets, you will need to rip out the globe rendering example code and roll your own multi-planet solar system.

This also means there is no scene management. But the authors do gloss over multi-frustum rendering for large volume scenes that cover distances from one meter to 100,000,000 meters or more.

A bit frustrating is how some techniques are covered in detail and at the end you are told “but there is a better way…” Immediately following, most of the “better ways” are covered but in a lot of cases you are instead referred to a source in the bibliography (which is the best graphics bibliography I have ever seen!).

Now the good stuff!

An Abstract Rendering Engine
OpenGL programmers know how difficult and error prone managing the OpenGL state can be. This book begins by presenting an abstract render engine and implements it in OpenGL. This render engine hides the complexity of managing OpenGL state. You don’t need to remember to restore the previous states after you draw an object. The render engine shadows the OpenGL state and takes care of the details for you.

Writing OpenGL code with this rendering engine is an absolute joy!

Note that the OpenGL core profile is used in the engine. This means you need to write your own vertex and fragment shaders to put anything on the screen. There are myriad shaders provided with all of the samples. If you don’t know GLSL, you might as well pick up a copy of the orange book (OpenGL Shading Language) as well.

Globe Rendering
Several methods for rendering globes are presented with projects that demonstrate each. The pro’s and con’s are clearly explained. Picking the method you’ll want to use is the hardest decision.

Massive Terrain
The last 4 chapters of the book concentrate on terrain rendering techniques. If you have ever wondered how a game or simulation renders hundreds of miles of detailed terrain, all is revealed here. Especially enlightening are the web services that retrieve data and terrain tiles from NASA and ESRI servers as you move through your scene.

Precision
There are two chapters that cover precision and the problems caused by floating point round off errors and artifacts caused by depth buffer z-fighting. These issues are addressed in detail with several different solutions (yes, the code for the solutions is provided!).

GIS
Part three of the book has two chapters covering vector data which really boils down to drawing lines and polygons. Where globe and terrain rendering is concerned, this means maps. If you have ever done any GIS programming (I worked on GIS software projects at UPS for 8 years) you will love the ESRI Shapefile reader/renderer.

Billboards are covered and a great texture atlas is provided in the API. The texture atlas makes rendering billboards a breeze.

Parallelism
Yes, you can write multi-threaded OpenGL code. And this chapter shows you how. The appendix covers a message queue used heavily in a multi-threaded program.

Lastly, I have exchanged several emails with the authors. They are prompt and very helpful in their replies. As busy as they are, the individual attention is greatly appreciated. They are currently working on a WebGL Virtual Globe and Map Engine called “Cesium.” Check it out!

nearly perfect, probably a classic

Ring and Cozzi have taken a poorly covered branch of real-time graphics research and slammed down a massive piece of bedrock from which all other entries are likely to stand upon. Their approach is slightly slanted towards virtual globes as maps for the display of information and not virtual globes as worlds for interactive exploration. For this reason some of the design approaches are awkwardly positioned against the massive infrastructures of high-end commercial game engines. The issues surrounding lighting, shadows and atmospherics are simply not given any serious design considerations. This is a book that's more about data management and less about rendering. For most of us that's actually a good thing but I'm sure a few readers may be a bit disappointed.

Great Book. Beginning with mathematics concepts and go up to build a complete earth with mesh, textures, etc.
The only thing i dislike is the sample code is written in C#.
