About the Author

Joseph S. Sanfilippo, MD, MBA, is a Distinguished Alumnus of the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine, Chicago Medical School. His postgraduate work includes completing the Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO)/Wyeth-Ayerst Academic Leadership Skills Program at the Wharton School and being awarded an MBA from Chatham University (for which he has served on the Board of Trustees as well as the MBA Advisory Board). He is currently Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility as well as Director of the Center for Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology at Magee-Women's Hospital.

Eric J. Bieber, MD, MSHCM received his MS in Healthcare Management from Harvard University and his MD from Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine. An obstetrician/gynecologist, his clinical subspecialty is reproductive endocrinology. Dr. Bieber is currently System Chief Medical Officer, University Hospitals and President, University Hospitals Accountable Care Organization (University Hospitals Health System, Cleveland, OH). His responsibilities include the creation of UH ACO's current management structure, encompassing 1,700 independent physicians and 1400 employee physicians. In addition to overseeing graduate medical education, he helped developed annual patient quality/safety conferences which draw more than 800 attendees.

David G. Javitch, PhD PhD is an organizational psychologist and President of Javitch Associates, a business consulting firm. He received his PhD from Ohio State and is a member of the Institute of Management Consultants, the American Psychological Association, and is the Vice President of the Men's Association of the Rehabilitation Center for the Aged. Dr. Javitch conducts management seminars (in English and in French) for executives from a variety of businesses around the world. In this capacity, he has worked with the European Union, the Organization of Eastern Caribbean Nations, several Ministries of Health, the US Department of State, and the US Agency for International Development.

Richard B. Siegrist, Jr. is co-director of the Master in Health Care Management Program and director of innovation and entrepreneurship at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He was previously CEO of Press Ganey Associates, senior vice president at WebMD, and co-founder and CEO of several health care startup companies.

Lucid explanations of important management concepts, with case examples

This is an excellent primer on management and leadership concepts for healthcare organizations. It covers a broad range of topics: strategic planning; organizational behavior and leadership; leadership and cost analysis; ethics and law. The writing is tight and lucid, each ending in a case study. Many chapters have good examples, and I appreciated the worked-through calculations for costing. The authors summarize a lot of theory in accessible ways, with the focus on implications for decision making and managing in the context of healthcare today (i.e. regulatory environment). Challenges are not ignored (for example, leveraging technological advances for healthcare), but overall the book is positive and accessible. I am teaching a new course in management and leadership for public health professionals and I think this book could be very relevant for that audience, as well as hospital managers and leaders of service delivery organizations.

NOT WHAT I EXPECTED FROM THE REVIEW

While there were parts of this book I really enjoyed and felt Fredy's pain I will have to give this book 2 stars. I knew from the review there would be some sex but I did not expect, sex, sex, sex, sex and then some more sex. Pages upon pages of sex. I don't need to know how everyone did their tounge on his penis or how each penis felt in his bottom. At times I felt I was reading gay porn. I wish he could have toned down the sex some and my review would have been different.

A LIFE-ALTERING READ

Not since reading Tennessee Williams' "Memoirs" in 1992 have I experienced such a raw, untethered account of one person's life. For me, it was like finding that most secret of secret diaries that only the author knows of its hiding place. Yet in this case, Fredy Espinoza has bared his complete soul in full view of the world. As the reader of this unfolding, many times harrowing tale, I became the willing guardian of a life so filled with promise and so rife with upheaval. From pure, base sexual desire to ethereal poetic imagery, Fredy Espinoza's ability to elicit such charged and heightened emotions from his reader is evidence of his innate gifts as a writer.

This book was so refreshingly honest that it puts everyone to shame! It's so real and bold, but its contents are not something a lot of people readily talk about, and all I can really feel is gratitude to the author for not holding back. That's the part that makes you realize that all of the skeletons in your own closet look like those in another's. It also clued me, a straight girl, into what it's actually like for a young man who is gay in a non-accepting environment. I'm appreciative for this because the part of the story about that struggle really hit home for me and I got it, and felt something real about it. I felt something real about a lot of things in this book, especially and including not only life struggles and triumphs, but also the actual spiritual journey's demons and angels, its irony, and its senseless sensuality.

I used this book almost exclusively to pass the exam yesterday. The most important thing to know is that if you studied for and passed 70-315 or 70-316, and then you study this book, you should have no problem passing the 70-320 exam.
A strong understanding of ADO.NET is a prerequisite, because this book does not review everything about ADO.NET that you'll need to know for the exam (but if you studied well for either 70-315 and 70-316, you should be fine). Of the new material, it is most important to have a detailed knowledge of .NET remoting and web services, including implementation, configuration, versioning, and security. This book goes into significant detail on these topics, and this is exactly what you need. There are a couple things missing, notably among security issues for web services, but this still should not significantly weaken your ability to pass the exam with just this book. It is also important to be knowledgeable of the COM+ and the XML classes, and these are covered well too. For COM+, the authors take the time to do it right, explaining the concepts clearly, and giving plenty of tools (such as simplified tables of attributes and class members) to get you familiar with implementation and configuration details.
As far as the topics of testing, debugging, deployment, and security go, Kalani has re-used a lot of his text from his prior Training Guide books. Much of it is therefore of a general nature which is a pre-requisite for the exam, but the exam focuses more on these issues as they directly involve the new technologies: .NET remoting, web services, XML, windows services, and COM+. It is important to know the details of how to configure all of these technologies, I think this is the biggest challenge of this material and of the exam. The book mostly covers these topics well, although there is a little bit of an unnatural split-up of material between the technology chapters and the deployment and security chapters. Also, I think the coverage of security for web services is insufficient, so hitting the documentation on that topic wouldn't be a bad idea.
I do not think the book is too verbose: throughout this whole series, Kalani certainly is not one to waste a paragraph saying what should only take a sentence, as some authors do. The writing is both concise and highly readable. But it is true that there is some "101" stuff covered about debugging and code access security, etc., as I said. For the main technologies, the rate of information is very good, I do not see that you could find much fat to trim in the text.
Now some people do not like simplistic, hand-holding labs, but these excellent examples have no frills, they are very concise and have little irrelevant code, so I found them very easy to digest very quickly. It is also good to see the important attributes and methods used in multiple labs, as this reinforces how and where to use them.
The exercises at the end of each chapter are important, because sometimes they make a point not covered in the text. And the chapter study questions are indispensable for highlighting key points, and whether or not they have sunk into your brain yet. In fact, the answers to the study questions are a more valuable review of the chapter than is the official chapter review blurb.
I notice now that the same author has an Exam Cram book on the same topic. You may want to consider that book, but I suspect that a book half as long will just be that much harder and slower to study than this book is.

This book will make you pass the exam!

This series is for sure the most popular training guide for Microsoft's MCAD/MCSD certification exams. Even after the release of a new generation of certification exams there are still folks (like me) who are still taking the 2003 exam for their own reasons. Let's see the most important pros and cons for this book:

Pros:

* Text: the text is well written and easy to understand. Very simple and clear vocabulary. It is not a boring reading.

* Guided Practices, Review Questionsand Exam Questions: there're plenty of exercises on every chapter, including 15 exam-like questions and some other review questions. I like books with exercises. It's a good way for the reader to measure what they've learned.

* PrepLogic software: gives a good idea of the kind of software you'll have to deal with on the real exam.

Cons:

* Code examples: as in most programming books code example tend to leverage for the beginner, sometimes lacking in code design.

All in all, this book is a sure shot if you're going to take the 70-315 exam as well as a good reading for ASP.NET newbies so don't hesitate to buy it.

Exam tips:

* be confident

* know your strengths and weaknesses

* don't rush the exam! there's plenty of time! in my exam there were 43 questions and 150 minutes for me to answer them!

If you are switching languages/environment, this is the book

This books covers everything you need to know to get a really good start in the ASP.NET, C# and Visual Studio.NET environments.

You won't be a guru when you finish but you will know how to create complex ASP.NET web pages and sites.

There is no fluff in this book, NONE. If you just scan it, you won't get the results you want. This is a hands on, do-it-yourself book. Which is one of the best ways to learn new material. I manually typed in most of the examples and learned everything I was hoping to learn. The examples are short and to the point and often have real-world benefits and tips.

The book is well written and extremely well edited. The editor, Ed Tittel, is a master editor because all the examples worked and they drive home, with just a few lines of code, the point the author is trying to make. Any errors in this book are nominal.

This book advanced my own abilities from struggling to grasp .NET to an advanced/intermediate .NET developer and has set me on the path to go as far as I want.

It took about 3 weeks to get thought the entire book, cover-to-cover, or about 150 hours.

Page 94: "Lead, the insecticide methoxychlor, and ethanol, the active ingredient in alcohol, cause effects in developing children that would be unpredictable from studies on adult animals or humans."

Upon noticing that gem, the book lost all credibility. Does the author really know so little about chemistry as to not know that ethanol is beverage alcohol?

Good Information

The book is saying what has needed saying for a long time...the chemicals in our lives are many and dangerous. However, Cranor repeats himself many times and the book is long as a result. I wanted to know more about our exposure on a daily basis and what I can do to sway our leaders to do more to protect us from these killer chemicals. The book is an awaking for sure, it is just not written for the average American.

My wife and I bought this book for our son, who's an aspiring YouTuber. Before giving this to him, I wanted to read it to discuss afterwards with him.

This book is AMAZING, filled with tons of tips and knowledge that applies far beyond Video Blogging.

The life lessons and entrepreneurial nuggets are phenomenal and something that should be taught (but aren't) in our schools. I know he'll not only enjoy reading this book, but will walk away with so much more, than just how to be a better video blogger.

I've been an entrepreneur whose had a few successes and more lessons over the last 20+ years, but I can truly say she sums so much up in a truly remarkable book. (think I highlighted something on almost every single page)

Better than the first

I enjoyed Blank, but Threads took things to new heights. I certainly wasn't expecting anything like this when I started reading. I simply expected to follow Linc, hope he didn't end up a drunk and washed up lonely man, and maybe even see him find happiness. What happened in this book was more than I'd have ever dreamed!

The twists and turns are fascinating, the characters are astounding and the plot becomes so intriguing that I couldn't put it down. There's so much I want to say, but I don't want to give away anything. Suffice it to say, if you read the first book, you will not be disappointed with this one.

There's a cliffhanger here, which is a bit frustrating because there is no book three yet. I will certainly be picking it up when it is available, though.

Blank: Threads (A Lincoln Delabar Science Fiction Adventure Book 2)
by Richard C Hale

Lincoln Delabar AKA Blank is now a grown man, older wiser and trying to put his past behind him. But he still feels a void in his life and he can't feel at peace (with himself) until he finds her. When he does find the woman from his past he finds another surprise, one that may not be so bad.

Soon his whole life will change as he is pulled into another world, and his "anger issues" resurface. He must learn to control his violent tendencies to achieve what he is looking for. Born without a face is not easy for Blank, but he has learned to accept that. He is ready for what world throws him, but is the world ready for Blank?

A well written gripping and compelling story, with drama, action and edge of your seat suspense. I really like Blank, I loved him from the first book. Blank is a unique person with special abilities that make the story fun to read, yet so intense. I could not put it down. I was hooked from the first page. There is so much more I would love to say but I don't do spoilers.

I will say the story is very original, the characters are likable (some not so likable), the plot is intense, the writing is fantastic. I highly recommend Blank: Threads (great as a stand alone). I also suggest reading Blank, book one.Richard C Hale is one of my favorite Authors. Check out his books, he will become one of your favorites too.

Thriller to Fantasy in one book

This book really surprised me, it started out in a similar vein to the first book, but eight years on. It begins with him causing some chaos in his job as a police officer. His powers are even more developed than they were in the first book. He then discovers that his first love Avril, is dying in hospital and also that he has a daughter, who turns out to have some amazing mental powers of her own.
The book then takes a completely different direction and becomes more of a fantasy novel as Linc and his daughter travel between a number of parallel worlds (the threads), in each one they encounter versions of Linc and Avril, it then culminates in a major battle. I won't say anything more as it will spoil the story.
There is a third book in this series, and I am not sure what direction that will take, will it return to the more traditional thriller format, or will it continue in the fantasy genre, I will be very interested to see.
For me this book is rather confused as to what it wants to be, and Richard's writing doesn't seems as fluid as it is in his usual thrilers and that is why I have only given it four stars, but if you like sci-fi/fantasy novels then this may be for you. I appreciate that this review seems a little negative, but I did enjoy the book.
