The "father of data warehousing" incorporates the latest technologies into his blueprint for integrated decision support systems

Today's corporate IT and data warehouse managers are required to make a small army of technologies work together to ensure fast and accurate information for business managers. Bill Inmon created the Corporate Information Factory to solve the needs of these managers. Since the First Edition, the design of the factory has grown and changed dramatically. This Second Edition, revised and expanded by 40% with five new chapters, incorporates these changes. This step-by-step guide will enable readers to connect their legacy systems with the data warehouse and deal with a host of new and changing technologies, including Web access mechanisms, e-commerce systems, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems. The book also looks closely at exploration and data mining servers for analyzing customer behavior and departmental data marts for finance, sales, and marketing.

From the Back Cover
The father of the data warehouse incorporates the latest technologies into his blueprint for integrated decision support systems

Having invented the corporate information factory (CIF) to help IT and database managers cut through the jungle of information technologies out there, bestselling author Bill Inmon again teams up with experts Claudia Imhoff and Ryan Sousa to show you how to integrate all key components of the modern information system architecture in a way that meets your evolving business needs.

You'll get clear explanations on how to integrate the enterprise data warehouse with a host of new technologies and solutions that have emerged since this groundbreaking work was first published in 1998. You'll also discover how to leverage these technologies to ensure broad access to information for end users, while reducing costs and improving scalability across the enterprise. Ultimately, you'll learn to design, build, and implement a company-wide information ecosystem that:
* Integrates with legacy systems and the Web
* Leverages third-party ERP, CRM, and eBusiness applications
* Exploits the latest in data exploration and mining technologies
* Takes advantage of low-cost alternative storage
* Scales across the enterprise through the use of data marts and operational data stores
* Accommodates the use of multiple data warehouses
* Can start small and grow incrementally

50,000 ft-level architectural overview
By DTC#
I saw Ms. Imhoff give a talk, so I was motivated to buy her book. I was expecting more detail and more depth, but I was satisfied anyway. As a new comer to the data warehousing/OLAP field, I found it helpful to have a book that showed me the "forest"; many other books are available to show me the "trees."
The book is a very high-level architectural overview of the components of a "corporate information factory", including the data warehouse, data mart, and operational data store. It describes the components and their relationships. It describes the motivations and reasons these components are organized the way they are. It describes some of the important engineering tradeoffs in alternate designs.
The book is a quick and simple read. I got a few very important concepts and ideas from it, but I must definitely read several other books for greater depth and focus.

Excellent starting point in data warehousing
By cityg
What a number of previous reviewers did not realise is that this book is about data warehouses, and not enterprise architecture, even though it is named to seem that way.
This book is an excellent high level overview of data warehouses and should be read by anyone who is going to be building a data warehouse from scratch or needs a starting place to learn about data warehouses. It explains all the concepts that are involved in building a data warehouse and explains what things can cause problems when implementing one.
It will not, however, describe the technical details on how to implement the data warehouse or many of the structures within it. That kind of information is readily available in many other books.
This is a perfect starting point for learning about data warehouses and especially good since it is a quick read and will not waste your time with a lot of wordiness.

Inaccurate and pompous, with little substance
By Noone Inparticular
I approached this book with an open mind, but after I stumbled upon a couple of obviously wrong and some nonsensical statements, I started reading it much more skeptically, and finding more and more problems with it. (However, it did provide more fun ;))

The book has a good premise, trying to explain information system with the factory metaphor. Although authors give some good insight in the way IS should or could be thought of and modeled, there are many instances in the text where you read something and say to yourself "what where these good people thinking". This then undermines your confidence in their vision and full understanding of the matter. And although I think this is a matter of personal preference, authors sometimes seem to be in love with their style, producing some beautiful nonsense like this: "The legacy environment is only a very small vestige of its former invincible self." (pg. 42)

Let me give you some more examples of what I'm talking about:
Authors create metaphors of user classes, calling them "tourist, farmer, explorer and miner", which in itself is not a bad idea, but then they go on to say "...farmers found at the ODS environment are quite different from the farmers found at the data mart". So why did you create the single metaphor then?

Also, check this out: "A miner will typically look over many, many rows of data...". As opposed to what, just a "many rows of data"? Whence some people might need "not so many rows of data"? Like I'm reading a book for my eight-year-old, for goodness sakes!

Then there is this graph showing the directional flow of data, but then it reads: by the way, in all this streams, data can sometimes ("in 1-5% of the cases" - authors never say how they got these numbers, it is all a slight of hand) flow in the opposite direction!!?(Pg. 24) And they go about giving 5 examples, 4 of which are wrong - there is no data flow in them at all!
Example:"...sales dept. notes that loans are slowing down. The decision is made to reduce home loan rates by 1/2 percent."
This is not the back flow of data, as authors assert, it is an information feedback loop that involves people (management), and their decisions. Data (loan rates) is not coming back from Data Mart. User is somehow entering it into Operational system (application). His decision is influenced by data analysis, but it does not reverse the data flow. The fundamental issue here is that authors ignored the fact that information processes in the company involve people as well as the data and systems, and should be modeled as such. To use their metaphor, users should be a part of the information ecosystem. Hence it is not true that, as the book claims, corporate information factory embodies the information ecosystem. (Pg.7)

"...'event' date ...reflects the moment in time when the data in the record was accurate". (Pg. 96) This is incorrect. 'event' date is just recording the time of that single event. Record is always accurate after that, it does not 'age' with time.

At pg. 191 it is asserted that Data Warehouse provides "depth" to the data. That is true only if it is built (modeled) with "depth" requirements in mind. Before I can get "deep" information from the DW, I must build it with my questions in mind, otherwise, it will not give me data. An abstractly deep DW does not exist. It is always an answer to a particular question, or number of questions.

"The Dimension of History" (pg. 193-194) is just plain good old nonsense, with example (life stages of an individual) being completely off the mark. Reminds me of the student who does not know the correct answer to the question so he tries to invent some plausible response, letting his imagination fly ... Sad.

And so on, and so on...

I saved the best ones for the end:
"...the external world is full of normal occurrences and normal events. The very ordinary nature of the external world makes us take it for granted." (Pg. 49) Very philosophically deep, indeed ;)
"The emergence of the integrated applications comes slowly and, in many cases, imperceptibly" (pg.42) Yeah, it just creeps on you when you're not looking... ;)
".. the back flow of the data is minuscule to the point that in some cases it is so small as to be unmeasurable". (Pg. 23) :0 Beg your pardon? This is not quantum physics, guys, this is computer science. Anything can be observed, perceived and measured to the level of a single bit. Or are we talking bit-quarks here? Informational principle of uncertainty?

It is disappointing to have this book co-authored by the "father of the data warehouse".

To the (prospective) readers: This is a fun book if you are an experienced data architect, bad if you wish to use it as a blueprint for your work, and dangerous if you are an IT manager and impose it on your staff.

To the authors: Give us a break, please go back and re-make a decent book around the good basic idea. Less poetic style would also be appreciated. Forget about quantum physics. And give it to some unbiased reviewers first. Remember, only the real friends will tell you the unpopular truth.

Code Name Verity, by Elizabeth Wein

Oct. 11th, 1943-A British spy plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France. Its pilot and passenger are best friends. One of the girls has a chance at survival. The other has lost the game before it's barely begun.

When "Verity" is arrested by the Gestapo, she's sure she doesn't stand a chance. As a secret agent captured in enemy territory, she's living a spy's worst nightmare. Her Nazi interrogators give her a simple choice: reveal her mission or face a grisly execution.

As she intricately weaves her confession, Verity uncovers her past, how she became friends with the pilot Maddie, and why she left Maddie in the wrecked fuselage of their plane. On each new scrap of paper, Verity battles for her life, confronting her views on courage, failure and her desperate hope to make it home. But will trading her secrets be enough to save her from the enemy?

A Michael L. Printz Award Honor book that was called "a fiendishly-plotted mind game of a novel" in The New York Times, Code Name Verity is a visceral read of danger, resolve, and survival that shows just how far true friends will go to save each other.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Teen Books of the Month, May 2012: Rich in historical detail and intrigue, Code Name Verity is a vivid reminder of what makes historical fiction so compelling. In exchange for a temporary stay of execution and lesser forms of torture, a young female spy captured in Nazi-occupied France writes a confession of her activities in the Resistance. Her story is that of two women who should never have crossed paths, yet were destined to become the best of friends and embark upon the covert mission that would determine which of them would live or die. Courage born of friendship, fierce hope, and surprising ironies abound in this spell-binding novel that will appeal to teens and adult readers alike.--Seira Wilson

Review
Shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal

“Between this and her follow-up, Rose Under Fire, Wein is revealing herself to be a new master of young adult historical fiction. . . . Filled with twists and turns, Code Name Verity is not for the faint of heart.”
—Rolling Stone

“This heart-in-your-mouth adventure has it all: a complex plot, a vivid sense of place and time, and resonant themes of friendship and courage. Practical Maddie and mischievous Julie are brought to life through their vibrant narrative voices and intriguing backstories . . . In this powerful work of historical fiction, Julie and Maddie need never fear ‘flying alone’; the reader will soar with them until the final page.”
—The Washington Post

“Young people will enjoy this Second World War spy story, no doubt, but its appeal is much wider. It's a beautiful thriller about friendship, courage and daring at a desperate time.”
—The StarPhoenix

“Moving back in time, rather than forward, Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein is an original, cleverly written Second World War story about spies, torture, women pilots, friendship and the horror of war.”
—The Independent

“A carefully researched, precisely written tour de force; unforgettable and wrenching.”
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“[Code Name Verity] is outstanding in all its features—its warm, ebullient characterization; its engagement with historical facts; its ingenious plot and dramatic suspense; and its intelligent, vivid writing.”
—The Horn Book (starred review)

“A fiendishly plotted mind game of a novel.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“If you pick up this book, it will be some time before you put your dog-eared, tear-stained copy back down. Wein succeeds on three fronts: historical verisimilitude, gut-wrenching mystery, and a first-person voice of such confidence and flair that the protagonist might become a classic character. . . . Both crushingly sad and hugely inspirational, this plausible, unsentimental novel will thoroughly move even the most cynical of readers.”
—Booklist Online (American Library Association)

“This book is written in a brilliant way. . . . Elizabeth Wein makes it always be believable and realistic as it is from the point of view of a young woman. . . . By the end, I was sobbing. . . . I would rate it a 10/10, for being so amazing and intriguing. . . . I think everyone should read this incredible and heart wrenching story of two girls.”
— The Guardian (UK)

“Everyone should read this book. Everyone, everyone, everyone. . . . It will, in certain moments, emotionally destroy you, put you back together again, and leave you slightly unable to function as a person after you’ve finished it. But in a good way. In the sort of way where you’re really glad you read it, and want everyone you know to read it as well. . . . It is unlike anything I have ever read, full of pain and bravery and friendship. . . . Run to the bookstore right now.”
—Feminist Fiction

“This book enthralled me from the opening words. . . . What a fabulous book. Made up of equal parts Nancy Drew, Girl Scout and Steve McQueen, these girls show just how much they took on, and how much they were capable of doing, during the war while the men were away. . . . The layers run deep. . . . Suffice it to say that if you are a fan of intrigue, war and strong females. . . you will not be disappointed.”

One of the most powerful books I've read
By Gretchen @ My Life is a Notebook
This review is of an ARC received from NetGalley.

There are few books that leave me speechless.

This would be one of them.

I'll admit, I had my reservations in the beginning. The narrator RAMBLES like whoa. I mean, I was reading on a screen and I saw pages taken up by just two paragraphs and I thought "Swell, this is just going and going and I'm going to be bored to tears."

I wasn't. Not by a long shot.

Usually, if the narrator rambles, I get bored and lose interest. Not here. Sometimes I feel like narrators in YA lack a distinct voice, but-again-not here. Verity HAS VOICE. Verity HAS PRESENCE. Despite the fact that she tells her story from Maddie's point of view, talking about herself in the first person, I felt like I was seeing into Verity's soul. There was no doubt in my mind about the voice that was just flying off the pages, talking to my heart. She not only managed to win me over despite rambling, but also despite talking about herself in the third person, which is huge. (The third person thing makes sense later, but I can't say anything about that!)

Plus, I was expecting a pretty dark, dramatic book. It is both of those things, but imagine my surprise when I found myself laughing out loud multiple times while I was reading. While Verity is being held by the Gestapo. I was laughing. That's how spectacular Verity is. That's how strong she is. That's what this book is like.

I'd also like to give a brief shout out on a very touchy subject. Not only is Verity a rounded person, but the German Officer who interrogates her is also a rounded character. He isn't this mindless drone, which I found very refreshing and made the book even more real. It would have been so, so easy to stereotype this guy, but Wein didn't. She MADE IT REAL.

You have no idea how hard it is not to comment on the second half of the book. I literally don't know how to write about that. I'll admit, personally here I found the voice weaker and several things too rushed, but at the same time I can't imagine certain events having differently, not if they still wanted to be real. The ending is very bittersweet, so I suppose my mixed feelings are supposed to be there.

And trust me, all of my feelings are there.

I could get technical. I could. I could talk for ages about the rambling, the technicalities, and the story tangents that don't make sense til the second half of the book. With any other book, I would. But with this one, I just can't. Code Name Verity was just one of those books.

A good book is fun to read. A good book takes you to a new place for a time, but then you put it down and you go on with your life. Code Name Verity was not a good book.

Code Name Verity was a great book.

It was the kind of book with images, words and ideas that get under your skin. The kind of story that melts into your heart. It was an experience that is with you long after you've closed the book. THAT is the kind of story that comes with Code Name Verity.

One of the great war books
By H Waterhouse
Oh. My.

When you read enough reviews that refuse to talk about the plot, you know there is a twist coming, but the twist ended up being other than what I expected, so thank you previous reviewers.

The VOICE in this book! The voiceS. I was riveted all through the book by how vivid and rich the conversations were. There are 24 highlights in this book, which is about double my usual rate, because I couldn't let phrases like
"You ignorant Quisling bastard, SS-Scharführer Etienne Thibaut, I AM SCOTTISH."
and
"Oh my sainted aunt! unlimited visibility! unlimited visibility except for the dirty great city in the northwest! That would be the dirty great city surrounded at 3000 feet by a few hundred silver hydrogen balloons as big as buses! How in the name of mud is he going to find Berlin if he can't find Manchester?"

Anyway, it's a war book. It's like many other war books for young readers, about the inhumanity of war and the humanity of the individuals writing it, and how jarring it is to try to understand all that together. I would unhesitatingly give this book to a middle-schooler. There is violence, but it is mostly by reference, and there is fear, the book is thick with it, but each of the main characters makes a list of things she is afraid of, and both of them include Failing Other People. I love books that are about being equally scared of dying and failing.

Fascinatingly, this is an entirely aromantic book. It's like everyone is so busy staying alive/fighting Nazis that they have all the mate-finding and sexual pursuit burned out of them. Except for one creepy handsy character, which I thought was a fascinating and unnecessary inclusion, but it models how to handle someone sexually pushy without becoming completely unhistorical. It makes the book more complicated and richer.
I suppose all he wanted was a kiss and a cuddle. He backed off looking deeply injured and left me feeling guilty and dirty and prudish all at once. Yes! That's what it feels like. And we should be saying so.

Read if: You have previously liked Elizabeth Wein books, you read /Escape from Colditz/ obsessively as a child, you wish you were clever and brave. You love stories about unlikely friends who push each other to be better. You like books with extensive bibliographies and references to English literature. (yes, this book was obviously written exactly for me. My point is that it may be exactly for you, too.)

Skip if: historically-accurate references to torture, execution, and the general misery of occupied France are going to be a problem for you.

Also read: Escape from Colditz;: The two classic escape stories: The Colditz story, and Men of Colditz. Rifles for Watie.

Final note: This book is way too absorbing to put down easily. It's not long, but allocate some undisturbed time for it.

I liked it, but I wanted to LOVE it
By Amy T
Crap, friends. CRAP. This is one of those reviews that I have dreaded writing for a long while. I finished CODE NAME VERITY by Elizabeth Wein nearly two months ago, and I've just sat down to write my review now. It's hard for me, sometimes, to gather the stones to tell you all that I didn't really like a book that is almost universally adored and that is, sadly, the situation I find myself in now. CODE NAME VERITY is so highly touted and so glowingly reviewed not only by the big trade magazines but by other bloggers and friends whose opinions matter to me that I wish I could say that perhaps my feelings towards Elizabeth Wein`s book are the product of my mood when I read it or some other excuse. Alas. My feelings of disappointment in CODE NAME VERITY are pretty real. I don't think I need to tell you how much that bums me out, but I will anyway: THIS IS A HUGE BUMMER. If it wasn't for the ending-say, the last 100 pages or so-I wouldn't even be able to tell you that I only LIKED CODE NAME VERITY, which I did. Like, but not love. Not really even close. Let's talk it out.

So, as you might already know, CODE NAME VERITY is the story of two young British girls during WWII who become involved with the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, one as a spy and the other as a pilot. One of the girls, Verity, does more of the spy thing and Maddie more of the flying thing. They develop a close friendship over the course of some time, so that when Verity and Maddie's plane crashes over France and Verity is taken prisoner, Maddie is distraught and eager to find her friend once she realizes what has happened to her. Meanwhile, Verity is in a Gestapo-run prison trying to barter for her life with secrets about British planes and airfields and any other juicy tidbits she might know. As the story comes to its conclusion, a THING of TREMENDOUS, EPIC THINGYNESS happens and Elizabeth Wein`s story fairly barrels to its conclusion. (Thankfully.)

I know that this all probably sounds great to you. And I suppose in some ways it is. We get great glimpses into the historical role of women in the war effort, and a story of friendship. But CODE NAME VERITY is split into two parts-the first is made up of Verity's "reports" that she is providing to the Gestapo in exchange for her life, and they are without a doubt some of the very dullest passages I've read in a really long time. There's lots of technical airplane talk that I understood not at all and, quite frankly, nothing very exciting that happens. I truly lost count of the number of times I almost put the book down. We see, through Verity's reports, the growing friendship between the two girls, and we get some sense of Verity's captors and her prison (both awful). It was all largely boring to me.

The one exception to that is Verity's voice. It had this great cavalier quality to it, and a sense of humor and irony that I was glad she could muster considering her surroundings. I admired her pluck greatly and often wished she wasn't telling stories of mind-numbing dullness because I got a sense that she would've had a real knack for yarns. She also had this really intriguing way of giving a bunch of information in great detail and then saying things like, "Oh well, you know, I hope you don't really think that I could've remembered all of this stuff, do you?" I did really enjoy her unreliability that way. If that was missing, I'm almost 99% positive that I would have put CODE NAME VERITY down.

Which would have been a little bit of a shame, because part 2, the end of the story from Maddie's point of view, was much more my speed in more ways than the literal one. It begins just a little bit before the THING THAT HAPPENS, and it was generally more interesting to me. The plot at that point is unfurling apace and we are learning things-really incredible, mind-blowing things-about Verity. If the entirety of CODE NAME VERITY had been more like the second part, two things would have happened, and herein lies the central issue of this book for me: One, I would have liked it more. But two, the book wouldn't have been nearly as gripping at the end, and it wouldn't have been such a feat of story-telling by Elizabeth Wein. It's a catch-22 of the worst kind. I just had no patience or fondness, really, for the setup. ALAS FOREVER.

I'm sure that if you've heard anything about CODE NAME VERITY already, it's these three things: It's AMAZING, I sobbed until I drowned myself in my own tears, and "KISS ME, HARDY!" The truth about my reading of this book is that, even though I now know what all the "KISS ME, HARDY!" is about, I have to tell you that I did not cry. At all. I didn't even well up. This is a pretty big deal for me because I cry easily and often about anything and nothing, and the THING? It's a pretty enormous, emotional THING, and I didn't really have any emotions about it more than, "Wow. That's a pretty big THING!...*crickets*" EEP!

If I can share just one more thing with you all before I wrap up and go hide myself from other readers' death glares, it would be this: I get completely that we are meant to understand that the girls are forever bffs, and that they become very close, important friends to one another. So perhaps this is because I was only mildly interested in what was going on for the first two-thirds of CODE NAME VERITY and so it escaped my notice, but I felt like I missed the development of their friendship somehow, and so when things happen later in the story, I was kind of at a loss. Writing that paragraph just made me nauseous.

Friends, I can't even tell you how high my expectations were for CODE NAME VERITY by Elizabeth Wein, which was likely part of my problem going in. Seriously, the number of five-star reviews for this book from among my Goodreads friends is STAGGERING! I see people tweeting all over the place about "KISS ME, HARDY!" and then devolving into internet-tears! People say that CODE NAME VERITY is their favorite book ever, the most special book they've ever read, one of the best, most touching, most beautiful. I couldn't count myself in that number. I kept waiting for it to get better for me. Not liking this book makes me feel like a tool, and it was certainly a book that I'm glad I read, but I just don't think it was meant to be between us. I will most definitely be reading the companion book, ROSE UNDER FIRE, though, because I recognize an excellent storyteller when I see one, and Elizabeth Wein is surely one.

Model Woman: Eileen Ford and the Business of Beauty, by Robert Lacey

A revealing, no-holds-barred portrait of the legendary Eileen Ford—the entrepreneur who transformed the business of modeling and helped invent the celebrity supermodel.

Working with her husband, Jerry, Eileen Ford created the twentieth century’s largest and most successful modeling agency, representing some of the fashion world’s most famous names—Suzy Parker, Carmen Dell’Orefice, Lauren Hutton, Rene Russo, Christie Brinkley, Jerry Hall, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell. Her relentless ambition turned the business of modeling into one of the most glamorous and desired professions, helping to convert her stable of beautiful faces into millionaire superstars.

Model Woman chronicles the Ford Modeling Agency’s meteoric rise to the top of the fashion and beauty business, and paints a vibrant portrait of the uncompromising woman at its helm in all her glittering, tyrannical brilliance. Outspoken and controversial, Ford was never afraid to offend in defense of her stringent standards. When she chose, she could deliver hauteur in the grand tradition of fashion’s battle-axes, from Coco Chanel to Diana Vreeland—just ask John Casablancas or Janice Dickinson. But she was also a shrewd businesswoman with a keen eye for talent and a passion for serving her clients.

Drawing on more than four years of intensive interviews with Ford and her intimates, associates, and rivals, as well as exclusive access to agency documents and memorabilia, Robert Lacey weaves an unforgettable tale of a determined entrepreneur and the empire she built—a story of beauty, ambition, business, and popular culture as powerful and complex as the woman at its center.

Review
“As glamorous and gossipy as one could wish.” (Slate)

“Ford’s status as a controversial, demanding figure isn’t ignored in Lacey’s portrait of one of the hardest working women in fashion. The juicy details of a tell-all are met with the nuance of a memoir in this portrait of the woman he recalls as the ‘matriarch of modeling.’” (New York Observer)

“A high-powered page-turner.” (Daily Beast)

“Unputdownable ... left me not only full of admiration for her achievements but also rather liking her....Lacey weaves riveting narratives into his account of the life of Ford ... with an eye for detail and juicy anecdotes.” (Financial Times)

“Exhaustively and painstakingly researched, yielding a biography that serves as a testament both to this woman’s professional prowess as well as her personal life….In the world of fashion related biographies, this surely ranks up there with some of the best.” (New York Journal of Books)

“A fascinating look at the woman who, perhaps more than anyone, shaped our ideas of what it means to be a sophisticated American beauty.” (People)

“Culled from countless hours of interviews... Lacey diligently maps the agency’s explosive success and skillfully intertwines the glitz and cutthroat melodrama of the modeling world with Ford’s shrewd, intimidating business strategies, uncanny vision, and ability to merge beauty with fame.” (Kirkus)

“In the fascinating Model Woman, author Robert Lacey paints Ford as an intriguing paradox….A wholly entertaining, insightful and slightly bitchy look inside the moneyed world of modeling.” (BookPage)

“An intensive look at a highly competitive business, with fabulous turf battles and clashing egos among the biggest names in fashion.... A compelling portrait of a savvy businesswoman who transformed the modeling business.” (Booklist)

Interesting look at how the agency got started; but leaves you wanting more!
By Reading Rocks
This book is an Eileen Ford bio combined; how the Ford Modeling Agency started; how the agency dealt with the changing times of modeling agencies. I've read lots of other books by Robert Lacey (primarily about England's Royals) so I knew that I would like his writing style - and I did with this book.

The book gets into great detail on her bio + how the agency got started and how it functioned in its first 5-10 years. The detail wanes off when the author gets into the 1960's and beyond. It leaves the reader really wanting more than what is written. The reader learns about how the Ford Agency tried to quash Casablancas from opening in New York and in Paris. The Ford Agency really stomped on anybody trying to open a modeling agency and for the longest time, the Ford Agency was a monopoly. Then ultimately, Casablancas - as did many others - did open an agency in both places.

What this book lacked - and what I thought it would include - was more interesting information and details about the models that the agency worked with. Details about how the bookers worked, how they coordinated a model's schedule, a week-at-a-glance or day-at-a-glance of a model's typical schedule....and of course, more stories about the models. There's a few sentences about a booker at Ford whom Eileen considered the best in the business who left to work for Casablancas' agency Elite. But no back story about why she was the best booker that Ford had other than she handled Cindy Crawford. There are some stories in the book about Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell, Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, and some others -- but just to whet your appetite.

Towards the end it covers Jerry's death, the sale of the agency, and then Eileen's death really quickly. It was like "Jerry didn't feel good, went to the hospital, then died a couple of weeks later..." The last 1-2 chapters is a skim-through -- kind of like the author just wanted to get it over with.

I guess I was expecting more "logistical" information about modeling and with the stable of models that Ford had during its heyday, I thought there'd be more model-stories.

The book still is interesting and offers a glimpse into the steel-iness of Eileen Ford which was balanced by her behind-the-scenes husband Jerry.

A success but maybe not a role model...
By Michelle B. Braverman
Thumbs up to Robert Lacey's breezy writing style, though I spotted one annoying typo( "Conde Nash instead of Conde Nast") and one glaring one (photographer Milton Greene, not Milton Green as written). When I find those it makes me wonder what other facts were unchecked, but this may just be me. Lacey did a great job with Eileen's background and history. His research of the time and places where she grew up was fascinating. I never knew about Great Neck being the "Hollywood of the East"! That she changed her name and dropped references to her half-Jewish background was not surprising for the era, especially as her Jewish father became a Quaker, and her mother was a good Roman Catholic. I agree with another reviewer who missed reading more on the agency's workings and the models themselves. I felt like the author didn't like Eileen very much, though he often defended her abrasive personality with quotes from supporters. In the end I confess I didn't like Eileen much myself.

By Susan McGraw Keber
I'm biased...I was signed with FORD MODELS as a 14 year old. Eileen and Jerry Ford gave me a fantastic opportunity that opened the doors to a multi-faceted and life long career in the fashion / publishing / acting business. Today I am still in the business and have had tremendous success as a Classic print and commercial model. There will never be another Eileen and Jerry Ford. I feel honored and blessed to have been a part of their agency. True to the author's account, Mrs. Ford was indeed a lioness and protective of her young charges both personally and professionally. Review
`A library of recent professional research lies behind this book, and it may well prove to be seminal for future writing. But for all those who are concerned for the Church's mission on the continent (as well as on the islands on its western fringe) this book ought to be required reading - all CofE ordinands included.' The Revd Jonathan Godall, Bishop's Chaplain and Research Officer

`The book deserves a wide readership and its blend of accessibility, empirical rigour, and theoretical sophistication should ensure, that like its predecessor, it becomes a standard text for some time to come.' Journal of Contemporary Religion, vol.16, no.3

`represents a major theoretical contribution to the discourses surrounding religion, identity and the disembedding of culture. An attractive feature is the inclusion of a wide range of scholarly material from non-English speaking sources, making this book both truly European in scope and introducing the reader to significant theoretical developments originating within European sociology.' Journal of Contemporary Religion, vol.16, no.3

`Davie's 'Religion in Britain since 1945' (1994) quickly established itself as a standard teaching text and this successor volume has been awaited with keen anticipation. Davie does not disappoint. The product of impressive scholarship, exhaustively researched and theoretically innovative, this book represents an important addition to our understanding of contemporary religious life.' Journal of Contemporary Religion, vol.16, no.3

`a bold and by no means unsuccessful gesture towards comprehensive coverage of contemporary European religion' Bryan Wilson, The Tablet

`a careful and distinguished analysis of the concept of 'secularisation' as applied to modern Europe ... one of its cardinal virtues is that it throws out diverting hints and implications which a tight theme and the limitations of space will not allow to be explored further.' Rev. Prof. Edward Norman, Church Times 12/01/01.

`Dr Davie's excellence resides in her sensitivity to the slippery nature of her materials. Her summary of the present realations of Church and state in European countries is also especially useful.' Rev. Prof. Edward Norman, Church Times 12/01/01.

A contemporary survey of a continent which is beginning to forget that it once was Christian. The Gospel and Our Culture, Spring 2002

The British Army in Afghanistan 2006-14: Task Force Helmand (Elite), by Leigh Neville

Fighting an elusive and dangerous enemy far from home, the British army in Afghanistan has been involved in asymmetric warfare for the best part of a decade. The eight-year series of deployments jointly known as Operation 'Herrick', alongside US and other NATO contingents within the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, have been the longest continuous combat commitment of the British Army since World War II. Together with Operation 'Telic' in Iraq, which immediately preceded and overlapped with it, this conflict has shaped the British Army for a generation. Enemy threats have diversified and evolved, with a consequent evolution of British doctrine, tactics and equipment. This book provides a detailed analysis of those specifics within a clear, connected account of the course of the war in Helmand, operation by operation.

Hell in Helmand...
By HMS Warspite
The British Army and Royal Marines spent eight years in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, as part of NATO's commitment to the International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF). That commitment remains intensely controversial; author Leigh Neville has consciously restricted his narrative to British tactics and equipment. The result is a concise and very readable account of Operation Herrick.

"The British Army in Afghanistan 2006-14" is an Osprey Elite title, just published in 2015. After a quick introduction to the conflict in Afghanistan, the author focuses down quickly on the British rotational forces and their experiences in Helmand Province. The approach is chronological, dealing in turn with each of the twenty force rotations through Helmand Province. UK Special Forces are mentioned but that topic is dealt with in another title. The narrative sketches each force rotation, the tactics employed against the Taliban, and the equipment used by the troops. The text is nicely supplemented with photographs, maps, diagrams and a few illustrations.

The author is quite blunt about the British military learning curve in battlefield intelligence and tactics, and the challenges of insufficient forces and inadequate equipment. He does so while recognizing the British Army and Marines generally made the best of a difficult situation. There is a short summary at the end on innovations in the military vehicles used in the campaign.

The Afghanistan campaign is just winding up; it may be years before full and fair-minded historical evaluation is possible. In the interim, books like this are a concise and readable introduction to the topic. Recommended.

Why don't we think like this?
By A Customer
I'm not an intellect, I'm just a curious college student who takes a slight interest in psychology. I randomly picked this book up out of curiosity. Boy was I suprised at the content in this book. It has opened my eyes up to so many new levels of thinking. It is well organized in that it breaks up the problems that we face in society on a personal basis. It covers dealing with ourselves and how we interact in a society. I would not consider this a self help book but more of a "let's think about what we're doing here" type book. A MUST READ for anyone who is not a mindless robot of society.

Insightful and powerful
By Justin Lee
Rollo May takes us on a quest in search for our true selves and gives us advice in how to live more meaningful lives. He uses parables and and analogies from Greek classics, biblical stories, and philosophical writings to help make his point. This isn't a "Ten Steps to Live a Better Life" type of book. It is a book that thoroughly and powerfully makes us look within ourselves for meaning.

That this book is dated shouldn't make it any less relevant. Lots of books that are read and appreciated today are timeless because they tap into some truth that is the essence of existence in any age. A hundred years from now, will the ideals qualities of humanity be much different from those of "freedom, responsibility, courage, love, and inner integrity"? Are these not the qualities and principals all people live by in any age in time? For sure, there are elements in there that are dated, but the feeling of emptiness always plagues society. It is perhaps a human consider for every society to feel "emptier" than the one that preceded it.

This is a book that I would recommend anyone who has gotten too used to living, and is taking it for granted. For life is precious, and a shame to waste. Rollo May's method of synthesizing literature, history, legend, psychology and philosophy makes this book accessible, relevant, and important.

Existential Philosophy, Psychology, & Literature
By D. S. Heersink
Boredom and anxiety are the two hallmarks of human existence that differentiates Homo sapiens from all other animals. The fact that humans have a past, present, and future consciousness makes them alert to many other possibilities of the imagination. Enter Rollo May and his existential psychology, which is a blend of existentialist philosophy, psychology, and literature. Together, they make us aware of what it is to be truly human.

This is not a self-help book, although no reader will go away disappointed. This is a book about integration of our deepest needs, coupled with our unique human biology, that makes us unique among all of earth's habitants. It is a focused look at what we must do to live life optimally by stripping away many of our attachments. These attachments often become security blankets that in turn become a source of alienation from fundamental choices we all must make. Once discarded, and opting for freedom and responsibility, we can live our own autonomous lives.

There are few prescriptions per se. Rather, this is an examination of a life lived well. In May's paradigm, the challenge is to force our inner being to a higher awareness of self-consciousness. He shows us how. I read this book 20 years ago, and reread it recently. It is still fresh and invigorating. It's easy to read, and really quite insightful. If you're unacquainted with May, this is a good place to begin. A delight to read
