Then, on January 10, 1901, the Spindletop gusher blew in. No other twentieth-century development had a more profound effect upon the state.

In this book, Roger M. Olien and Diana Davids Hinton chronicle the explosive growth of the Texas oil industry from the first commercial production at Corsicana in the 1890s through the vital role of Texas oil in World War II. Using both archival records and oral histories, they follow the wildcatters and the gushers as the oil industry spread into almost every region of the state. The authors trace the development of many branches of the petroleum industry—pipelines, refining, petrochemicals, and natural gas. They also explore how overproduction and volatile prices led to increasing regulation and gave broad regulatory powers to the Texas Railroad Commission.

About the Author
DIANA DAVIDS HINTON has a Ph.D. in History from Yale University and holds the J. Conrad Dunagan Chair in Regional and Business History at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

ROGER M. OLIEN, who has a Ph.D. in History from Brown University, lives in Austin and is a member of the Texas State Historical Association Speakers Bureau. The authors have written five books and numerous articles on the petroleum industry.

A great introduction to the early history of the Early Oil industry focussing on Texas I went for the Audible version

I am a New Zealander so neither a Texan or of Oil Stock
It would be a pity if this excellent work only found its way into the above homes.
I found it a very useful introduction to the early history of Oil. It's focus is on Texas and the approach is by area and chronology.
Eg it takes the Spindletop area and follows its story through in that chapter
Later it takes the Permian Basin and shows how it fairly barren and rug hard area became a major oil area.
One learns about sweet crude and (sulphurous ) sour crude and crude with a fair mixture of paraffin
Technological developments like developments in drilling,storage, pipelines, refining and exploration are scattered throughout the text.
With improvements in refining Aviation Octane arrived just before WWII and the modern Plastics industry was just starting
One is introduced to a number of major and smaller players with bigger firms,indecent ants and loners.
One sees how Texas aimed to control the finances so that Texas benefitted most
One also learns about the problems for the Permian Basin-- it's inassessability and the poor nature of its crude so that it didn't attract a premium
One learns how the University of Texas became the richest University in the World. In the Texas constitution from the 1860's I think , the founders of Texas put extensive but near valueless lands aside for 2 universities. Nothing much came of this till oil was struck on University lands in the Permian Basin. The story has lots of twists and turns (what royalties went to Ranchers, what to the University of Texas, what to UAM etc)
I hope I haven't put you wrong on the details. I have learnt a lot from the book and will be going though it again to try and firm up on a number of details.

I had the kindle version but found I made a lot more progress by someone reading it to me
I think this helps bring out the gripping nature of the story

Oil in Texas: The Gusher age, 1895-1945

This book, bought for our son whose career is in the oil and gas industry, was just right for him. I had reviewed another copy while visiting my brother, Bill Fortune. He, too, received a new copy a few weeks ago and upon his recommendation, I decided to buy one for our son. I read quite a bit from the book before I passed it on and for sure want to read it all someday. The fact that it was once in a library made it quite interesting. We Texans enjoy all aspects of our state history and what I read did not disappoint. The preface was clear in expressing the intent of the book and I am certain that our son aw well as his wife [ her family has been in the West Texas oil and gas work for generations] will be blessed with this fascinating read. I recommend it for a gift to almost anyone who enjoys Texas history.

This is a fantastic book for those with an interest in the oil industry, I bought 4 copies as I have relatives that were involved in the early days of oil exploration in south Louisiana.. They really enjoyed this book.

Since much of their career together had entailed political advocacy for giant technology programs—that is, speechwriting, ghostwriting, personal coaching, lobbying, strategic marketing, and public relations—they also brought a mastery of all the things that make oral proposals different from written proposals.

After their first fifty oral proposal competitions (almost every one a winner) they codified and service-marked their oral proposal development process, Winning Out Loud, which is the basis for this book. Their experience on the next 200 competitions brought refinements to a process which has added many billions of dollars to the top lines of the Harrises’ clients.

Since deciding in 1996 to focus exclusively on leading oral proposal teams, they have coached more than 1000 people, from 100 companies, through 250 competitions. In addition to coaching orals teams, they have advised executives in 50 companies, including twenty Fortune 500 companies, on how to consistently win oral proposal competitions. Frazier helps us make sense of the disruptive presence of black travelers and how black folk came to see themselves in the world

It is great to read history where one can see themselves. I value The East is Black for contextualizing this slice of history in an accessible way for readers other than academics. I happen to remember when the world (according to the written word/media) began to enlarge beyond the US borders for some black people. I also remember the point in my life (mid-late 60's) when the stories that were disruptive to the then status-quo began to reach black people. These are primary sources in The East is Black. Frazier has taken the time to parse what many black travelers, prisoners of war, thinkers, publishers, et al had to say at the time. For that reason alone and for his accompanying scholarship, I highly recommend this book. Oh we knew we were there: black people, black travelers living and sharing their perspectives of their lives. Now Frazier is helping us make sense of their words legacy.

I just finished reading this brilliant book. "The East Is Black" uncovers a little-known history of Afro-Asian solidarity forged between African American activist-intellectuals and communist China in the mid-twentieth century. Frazier documents the stories of a cadre of African Americans who traveled to (& lived in) China and who sought to internationalize their struggle for freedom and justice. This history gets told through the lives and efforts of such figures as W.E.B. DuBois & Shirley Graham DuBois, Mabel & Robert Williams, William Worthy, and others. Anyone with an interest in Civil Rights/Human Rights, China-US relations, and Black radicalism will find much of interest in this richly sourced book.

I learned alot from this book. would recommend it highly to anyone trying to understand history of resistance to oppression.
for me it was way long on current jargon and short on facts. so i found it somewhat tedious. but when it was presenting narrative and not analysis it was fascinating. ironically I find that his presentation of Chinese history pretty much parroted current mainstream analysis with very little evidence . i could see other reviewers giving a 5 star, and wouldn't contend because my criticisms may be idiosyncratic

Many people have tried and document the making of a module for PrestaShop, but it's not an easy task to take on. Fabien Serny chose an interesting angle and takes you step-by-step through the development of a PrestaShop module, starting with the very basic so it's accessible to beginners too.

Prestashop documentation is an area that needs improvement and this book is a much needed help.
It follows a very practical approach and guides to the development of some useful custom modules with source code commentary and some insights to the general Prestashop architecture, the book is well written and concise.
It helped me to get a better confidence with the platform and gave a boost to the development of a custom module I'm working to.

I've been working with Magento for several years and now I decided to take a look over PrestaShop. After having tips here and there, via internet tutorials, I bought this book. I really recommend it as I could learn a lot. Fabien Serny explains everything in a easy way, doesn't waste our time and cover almost every topic you need to know on PrestaShop modules development.

PS: just to make it clear, if you are looking for installation and themes development, this is not the right book for you.

Huffington exhorts women to "break through to the other side of fear" and to be bold in all aspects of life. She tells listeners that in order to join a Cambridge debate club, she had to overcome her fear of having a heavy Greek accent. In a nutshell, that's both the tenor and flaw of this book. Huffington might have done better to work on overcoming her accent than the fear of it. To her credit, she reads her book slowly and carefully, and almost all of her words can be understood by even the casual listener. A larger problem is that the message of overcoming fears about beauty, competition in love and so forth probably comes across better in a written text. Not fitting into society's prescriptions does have real consequences, whether one is fearless or not. Nevertheless, women who finish Huffington's mantra might feel better about who they are, even if they are listening while having their bodies waxed.

Go Fearless!

I can't tell you how touched I am by this book. Here is Ms. Huffington, a woman known for her political influence and intellectual pursuits, who chose to write a book about her intimate relationship with fear. What an amazing gift that a person accomplished in so many ways paused to share her story of living with, yet breaking through, fear.

Prior to reading this book, I held a belief that great people did not have to work with the same type of inner chatter - "the world's worst roommate," as Ms. Huffington so aptly puts it. Ms. Huffington has given me such a gift; to see that it is not some better, less fearful mind that makes her success a possibility, but rather her feisty excitement at moving through and past her fears!

If you are considering this book, I highly recommend it! If you like this style of writing, in which wisdom is collected and woven together through a series of stories and anecdotes, I also recommend that you check out Ariel and Shya Kane's most recent book, Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment. Like Ms. Huffington, the Kanes are skilled at using their wisdom and life experience to guide their readers past the limiting fears and ideas that naturally impede well being, so that life can be lived at its best: as a daring adventure!!!

Who doesn't love the Huff? I remember enjoying this but don't remember much beyond an anecdote about Arianna falling asleep at her desk.

Still, it passes the time pleasantly enough, and the woman has done some impressive stuff.

Only if you're interested in the making of the covers

[[VIDEOID:moG03PTW8C4WLA]]This book is presented in hardcover, roughly the same size as the comics. Inside, it collects cover art of the single issue volume 1-50, trade paperback volumes 1-8, Books 1-4 and Deluxe Hardcovers 1-2. There are also sketches and unused designs.

If you are a collector of the comics, you already have majority of the art. The reason to buy this book is probably the commentary if you're interested in how they come up with the covers. Creator Robert Kirkman, artists Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard look back in hindsight at what they like and the ones that didn't work out well.

The art is beautiful but there are a few misses as well - all that are mentioned in the commentary provided.

This book is more for the ultimate collectors. Casual fans probably can do without it. Besides, most of the cover art can be found easily online.

Covers of comics, not the actual comic.

I bought this book because I didn't have the covers of the comics. I had purchased the Compendium's 1 and 2 of the walking dead comics, however there aren't any covers in the book. The quality of the paper is a very good glossy paper, with fully colored and very detailed comic covers from the series. Each cover has a little bit of bonus info about the cover. For anyone who may be confused THIS IS NOT THE COMICS, ONLY THE COVERS OF ISSUES 1 - 50.

For The Art Enthusiast As Opposed To The Casual Fan--An In-Depth Look At Process

"The Walking Dead" is an undeniable classic in zombie lore, graphic novels, and great storytelling. Trust me, I'm a huge fan! And, on its fifth anniversary, we get this handsome collection of art. If you've purchased any of the hard cover editions of "The Walking Dead," "The Covers" is the same approximate size and assembles the cover illustrations from the first 50 issues of the series. It also has some bonus covers from various collections and reprints. The layout of this volume has the covers, full sized and in color, on the left page while the right page has supplemental information. The new material provides context from creator Robert Kirkman and artist insight from Tony Moore and Charles Adlard. There are rough sketches, sample layouts, art discussions and some anecdotal material. It's all very pretty and well put together.

But is it necessary? That's a qualified maybe. I own all of "The Walking Dead" and I guess I just didn't feel the need for this additional piece. If you are an aspiring artist, however, or are fascinated by art theory--this may indeed be something you'd find compelling. It is most successful at discussing the process of illustration. There is an audience for "The Covers," it is just a specialized one. If you're a completist, "The Covers" would also make a lovely coffee table book if that appeals to you--but I need another coffee table book like I need a hole in my head. In no way would I discourage a fan from buying "The Covers"--just realize that this one's all about the art! KGHarris, 10/10.

Combination Textbook/Coffee Table Book is Surpisingly Engaging & Helpful

Somewhere between a textbook and a coffee table book, The Psychology Book is a surprisingly valuable. Initially drawn to the fun cover and positive reviews of The Philosophy Book, I decided to give this a shot and ordered a copy. My initial reaction was disappointment, it seemed a too textbooky. But as I read and skimmed further (it's a book that I suspect few will read cover to cover), I started to appreciate the helpful effectiveness of what the DK editors have done, allowing one to get important, core ideas quickly.

After presenting the philosophical roots of psychology (think the intersection of philosophy and phsyiology), the book is organized according to different psychological approaches or schools of thought such as behaviorism, psychotherapy, cognitive psychology, and social psychology. There is a timeline and brief history for each school followed by an encapsulated entries of key thinkers in that discipline. Here is where the design and editorial approach shines, as you can peruse the pages and find psychological thinkers who you may know little or nothing about and get the essence of what they focused on quickly. Each heading has a "capture the essence" quote which makes it easy to know whether you want to explore further. My one complaint is the book, just glancingly mention Irv Yalom, who is both a great writer and highly respected psychotherapist. If you haven't read or listened (I loved the audio version, which includes an interview with Yalom) to his master work, Love's Executioner: & Other Tales of Psychotherapy, I strongly recommend it and have given it as a gift many times. Definitely a must for anyone with a literary bent and an interest in psychology.

Some quotes/outtakes I liked:

>"Suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds meaning." --Viktor Frankl (p. 140)
>"Compulsive behavior rituals are attempts to control intrusive thoughts." --Paul Salkovskis (p.212)

I especially like this last one, as it's interesting to think of our obsessive thoughts (even if we don't engage in compulsive behavior) as attempts to control or prevent uncomfortable thoughts or emotions instead of just trying to experience them directly, as they are.

There are many nuggets like that in the recommended book.

This book is awesome!

I absolutely love this book! If you are a psychology major or just interested in human behavior, this book is for you. Its explanations, pictures, and diagrams are so easy to read and follow! It includes the history of concepts as well as current findings and thinking on the subjects. I love how the book is divided up - philosophical roots, behaviorism, psychotherapy, cognitive psych, social psych, developmental philosophy, and psych of difference (personality & intelligence). I have learned so many interesting facts from this book. For example, one of the concepts on the cover of the book is - A Man with Conviction is a Hard Man to Change. Read about cognitive dissonance and why it is so hard to change someone's opinion and thought processes when they really believe in it, no matter how insane or impractical it may be. You won't be sorry with the amount of information, ease of reading, and layout of the book.

Easy and informative read

This is my kind of book. I am always furthering my education beyond what I am learning at University. Because I am still in college and reading constantly I really appreciate the format of this book. It is organized by the different divisions of psychology from social to child and within are the most significant people, theories, experiments, and concepts in a short story format. This makes it easy to learn a lot of information on limited time. This book is to the point on each subject and filters though unnecessary information and gives you what you need to know right away. I can enjoy learning new things outside my coursework because this book gives information in this short story format. I have taken a couple of courses in psychology but this book does not require the reader to have previous information in psychology in order to appreciate the knowledge the book contains. After this book I bought the religions and philosophy book by this publisher and will buy the business one as well when it comes out. Overall for the learner who is limited on time this (and others by the publisher) are for you. If you want something that is more specific, get something else because this one is an overview of all.
