About the Author

Philip T. Krein holds the Grainger Endowed Chair in Electric Machinery and Electromechanics as Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Fantastic Textbook to read in or out of school

This book was required reading for me but I enjoyed reading almost every single chapter. As a healthcare worker, it truly challenged the way I think and placed ethical issues in a perspective that allowed me to think for myself about all of them. There is a slight focus on the PPACA which I guess should be expected since that is one of the lastest issues our country is challenged with. The text covered many issues that we have been faced with throughout the last two to three decades in healthcare and I liked the fact that it discussed newer and more interesting issues first to keep you engaged.

I appreciated that it is kind of like an anthology in that most every chapter is a different author making each chapter feeling fresh. If you work in healthcare and serve patients, whether you are going to school or not, I recommend this book. It is certainly enlightening, educating, and challenging!

Chapter 1 was tough getting through but once you understand the theories, the remaining chapters get easier to understand. I have not read the entire book yet due to the start of the semester at school. I hope that the examples given throughout the text continues to drive the point home.

I use this all the time as part of my clinical pathology residency-it's much more readable than most of the other texts because it links the pathophysiology to the observed electrolyte imbalance very clearly. The only problem is that it does stick to the subjects in the title-so some other critical care topics (e.g. bleeding disorders) aren't included...but it's well worth the price for the topics covered. Ideal for vets, vet students and residents with an interest in critical care, anaesthesia or medicine-but maybe not applied enough for most nurses or vet techs.

More than a story...

Biographies are not my thing. I don’t know if I can really say that, since I’ve never really read one outside of school, but they just carry with them this air of stuffy ‘factual’ boredom. I just feel like reading one will slip me into a coma. I have read a few memoirs, and I’ve found them (some of them) to be really moving. I guess you could classify ‘On the Road’ as a memoir, since it’s an accounting of Jack Kerouac’s travels on the road (a few of them, actually). So, it’s kind of like a time specific or thematic autobiography that reads more like a novel on speed.

I dug this one.

It’s almost hard to explain exactly what ‘On the Road’ is, since it’s less a story and more a continually moving expression of an individual’s momentary mindset. As Jack Kerouac literally spills out everything he’s thinking, devoting passages to thoughts, actions and contemplations, ‘On the Road’ whips from one place to another without really going anywhere at all. Now, I know that that sounds like a bad thing, since we often criticize a plotless or seemingly pointless artistic expression, since we instinctively want to be taken somewhere, to land at a climax of sorts, and yet there is a beauty in the anticlimactic wonderment of the entirety of ‘On the Road’. There is this lingering absence of any grounded stability, the story taking off in so many directions, leaving characters for long spells for no reason and quite sporadically and abruptly and yet it is within these fractured and severed ‘tales’ that the story finds itself taking root in the reader.

I have never been so rapturously engulfed by something I was continually struggling to get a grip on.

Now, I have to point out that the version I have just put down is the Original Scroll, which is not the original version that was released back in the 50’s. This original version, restored and finally delivered to the public back in 2007, is a different animal than the one that first appeared back in 1957. This version ditches all pseudonyms, referring to each character by the name that inspired them. So, out are names like Sal and Dean and in are the true identities of these people; Jack (our narrator and author) and Neal. The book is also presented in its original format, which adds to the chaos and almost blurred reality of Jack’s travels. There are no paragraphs, no chapter breaks, just one long block of type that was originally typed out on a 120 foot scroll of tracing paper over a three week time period. It makes for a very unique and memorable reading experience, albeit a tad exhausting at times and very hard to take a break from (and beings that I can’t devote HOURS to reading there were times where finding a spot to leave off was frustrating).

Still, I feel something internally changed after reading ‘On the Road’. It’s not like anything else I’ve ever experienced. It’s not a book, not a mere story, but a moment in time, a fragment of real life, severed from the life living it and presented to the reader with a recklessness that can only appear in the midst of a real soul.

About the Author

Nicholas Copeland is a social anthropologist at Virginia Polytechnic University. His research about state power and Maya politics in Guatemala appears in the Journal of Latin American Studies and Development and Change. Nick taught at the University of Arkansas, and has conducted extensive market research inside Wal-Mart.

Christine Labuski is an anthropologist and assistant professor in Women’s and Gender Studies at Virginia Polytechnic University. Her work can be found in Feminist Studies, Archives of Sexual Behavior, and several edited volumes about the gendered body. She has also spent countless hours inside of Wal-Mart stores as a market researcher.

Great book; great teaching tool

I actually had to purchase this for an anthropology class, but once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting it down. It's a well-written, easily understandable book even for people not familiar with anthropological terms and concepts, and I think because it analyzes such a current social fact, it holds a more contemporary understanding and interest for readers. Like the title says, it's a great book--I've recommended it to several people in my acquaintance--and it's a great teaching tool as it explains anthropological concepts using a contemporary example that people interact with on a daily basis, thus meaning that students are more passionate and engaged with the material.

I was hoping for a bashing of Walmart., but no. This book is rather objective.

This looks at Walmart from something of an anthropological point of view. It's well done, a compelling read I can see how it would be useful in a class, it's succinct, readable and provoking.

The book is even-handed in describing how Walmart does in fact provide employment and low prices, but does so at the social cost of low wages and squeezing suppliers (and to suppliers' labor environment). This is not a liberal tirade at a cutthroat giant, it is a solid analysis. The book says that 10% of what China makes is bought by Walmart, and that Walmart sells 20% of the groceries sold in the USA.

Copeland credits Walmart with some ethical principles (unlike many analyses) but says that these are subverted by Walmart's commitment to ruthless pricing, ruthlessly fighting unions and their commitment to neoliberal economics. Me, I refuse to buy anything from Walmart, so you may see a bias here.
