Combination Textbook/Coffee Table Book is Surpisingly Engaging & Helpful
By Bill Gallagher
Somewhere between a textbook and a coffee table book, The Psychology Book is a surprisingly valuable. Initially drawn to the fun cover and positive reviews of The Philosophy Book, I decided to give this a shot and ordered a copy. My initial reaction was disappointment, it seemed a too textbooky. But as I read and skimmed further (it's a book that I suspect few will read cover to cover), I started to appreciate the helpful effectiveness of what the DK editors have done, allowing one to get important, core ideas quickly.

After presenting the philosophical roots of psychology (think the intersection of philosophy and phsyiology), the book is organized according to different psychological approaches or schools of thought such as behaviorism, psychotherapy, cognitive psychology, and social psychology. There is a timeline and brief history for each school followed by an encapsulated entries of key thinkers in that discipline. Here is where the design and editorial approach shines, as you can peruse the pages and find psychological thinkers who you may know little or nothing about and get the essence of what they focused on quickly. Each heading has a "capture the essence" quote which makes it easy to know whether you want to explore further. My one complaint is the book, just glancingly mention Irv Yalom, who is both a great writer and highly respected psychotherapist. If you haven't read or listened (I loved the audio version, which includes an interview with Yalom) to his master work, Love's Executioner: & Other Tales of Psychotherapy, I strongly recommend it and have given it as a gift many times. Definitely a must for anyone with a literary bent and an interest in psychology.

Some quotes/outtakes I liked:
>"The good life is a process, not a state of being" --Carl Rogers (p.130)
>"Suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds meaning." --Viktor Frankl (p. 140)
>"Compulsive behavior rituals are attempts to control intrusive thoughts." --Paul Salkovskis (p.212)

I especially like this last one, as it's interesting to think of our obsessive thoughts (even if we don't engage in compulsive behavior) as attempts to control or prevent uncomfortable thoughts or emotions instead of just trying to experience them directly, as they are.

There are many nuggets like that in the recommended book.

This book is awesome!
By Mother and Shaker
I absolutely love this book! If you are a psychology major or just interested in human behavior, this book is for you. Its explanations, pictures, and diagrams are so easy to read and follow! It includes the history of concepts as well as current findings and thinking on the subjects. I love how the book is divided up - philosophical roots, behaviorism, psychotherapy, cognitive psych, social psych, developmental philosophy, and psych of difference (personality & intelligence). I have learned so many interesting facts from this book. For example, one of the concepts on the cover of the book is - A Man with Conviction is a Hard Man to Change. Read about cognitive dissonance and why it is so hard to change someone's opinion and thought processes when they really believe in it, no matter how insane or impractical it may be. You won't be sorry with the amount of information, ease of reading, and layout of the book.

Easy and informative read
By Lindsey
This is my kind of book. I am always furthering my education beyond what I am learning at University. Because I am still in college and reading constantly I really appreciate the format of this book. It is organized by the different divisions of psychology from social to child and within are the most significant people, theories, experiments, and concepts in a short story format. This makes it easy to learn a lot of information on limited time. This book is to the point on each subject and filters though unnecessary information and gives you what you need to know right away. I can enjoy learning new things outside my coursework because this book gives information in this short story format. I have taken a couple of courses in psychology but this book does not require the reader to have previous information in psychology in order to appreciate the knowledge the book contains. After this book I bought the religions and philosophy book by this publisher and will buy the business one as well when it comes out. Overall for the learner who is limited on time this (and others by the publisher) are for you. If you want something that is more specific, get something else because this one is an overview of all.

Many-Particle Theory,, by E. K. U. Gross, E. Runge, O. Heinonen

The quantum theory of many-particle systems has applications in various branches of physics including condensed matter, atomic, molecular, nuclear and high-energy. An understanding of this theory is therefore important to most students of physics and Many-Particle Theory is an excellent introduction to the subject. Many-Particle Theory presents a detailed and logical account of the theory and techniques used. Basic subjects such as Green's functions and Feynman diagrams are discussed in detail, and many examples and applications are given, such as the Hartee-Fock approximation, superconductivity and the Kondo problem. Due to the detailed derivations and the fact that only a grasp of basic quantum mechanics is assumed, the book is an ideal textbook for graduate students and teachers of physics. The comprehensive bibliography contains many recent books and articles for further studies. Many-Particle Theory is a translation of the second German edition, which is an expanded version of the popular first edition. All three authors, E K U Gross, E Runge and O Heinonen, are well respected researchers in the field.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—The Greenglass House is the kind of ancient, creaky home in which a gothic horror story might be set, and the plot in Milford's latest seems to be headed that way, at least at first. Milo has just finished his homework and is looking forward to the quiet time over Christmas break, when the inn for smugglers his adopted parents run is usually deserted. But in the midst of a howling blizzard, an odd assortment of visitors with secretive purposes seemingly related to the history of the building shows up at the inn. When the power goes out and items begin to go missing from the strange new guests' rooms, Milo decides to team up with the cook's daughter, Meddy, to figure out which, if any, of the guests arrived with nefarious purposes. Meddy's interest in Role Playing Games (RPGs) and her insistence that she and Milo adopt new names and personalities for their quest can make certain passages confusing, as Milo often refers to and thinks of himself as his game character, Negret. A twist near the end of the story helps fold the RPG plotline into the overarching narrative, while the icy, atmospheric setting and nuanced character development propel the story forward, in spite of lingering questions about the world the characters live in. Give this one to fans of Trenton Lee Stewart's "The Mysterious Benedict Society" (Little, Brown).—Elisabeth Gattullo Marrocolla, Darien Library, CT

From Booklist
*Starred Review* It’s Christmas break and adopted Milo and his parents are looking forward to a vacation all to themselves at Greenglass House, the inn where they live and routinely host benevolent passing smugglers. When five unusual guests unexpectedly arrive, and their belongings—which all have something to do with the house—start disappearing, Milo finds himself at the heart of a real mystery. With the help of Meddy, the oddball girl who arrives with the cook, and a role-playing game that gives him the courage to poke around where he knows he is not supposed to, Milo uses his knowledge of the house and his skills of observation to find the missing objects, piece together the mystery of the house, and discover a secret about the legendary folk hero who used to live there. The puzzling mystery is perfectly matched by the offbeat world of Nagspeake, a fictional harbor town enhanced by folklore and history rich enough to sound convincingly real, and the dreamy Greenglass House, with its enviable attic, snug corners, and thrilling past. Milford (The Boneshaker, 2010) weaves together compelling clues, crackerjack detective work from Milo and Meddy, and well-rounded characters to reveal heartwarming truths about Greenglass House and its residents. An enchanting, empowering, and cozy read. Grades 5-8. --Sarah Hunter

beautifully written characters
By Jennifer Miller
Summary:
Greenglass House, an inn owned by The Pines, is usually very quiet during the winter. It is off season and Milo, The Pines' adopted son, is ready for a break. Unfortunately, the inn suddenly floods with guests and The Pines have to ask one of their employees to come back and help. Mrs. Caraway brings her daughters with her and they all set out to keep the inn running during the winter. One of the daughters, Meddy is the same age as Milo, so the two of them become friends. They begin playing this role playing game and taking on different characters to help solve mysteries and possibly find treasure. Each character accents things that the children would rather be. For instance, Milo's character is brave and bold, whereas Milo has some anxiety issues and is rather meek. These personas add an element to each character which allows more of the inn's history, the guests inside, and the treasure to be explored.

My thoughts:
This is a multi-layered story that has fabulous main and side characters. Milford has managed to bring to life Milo and Meddy in two different ways. First, they are both children that are learning about themselves, their history, and their growing friendship. There is no romance, but the two definitely need one another. Their role-playing personas are also fully defined. Those give an extra layer to each child. We find their insecurities and ways they learn to deal with it. On top of that, it reminded me of times when I pretended to have an imaginary friend to get into mischief with. Finally, all of the guests within the inn have a very important part of play in unveiling the overall mystery. They also have their own kooky personalities which are interesting to read through. As well as Milford's wonderful characters, she also builds a world that makes you feel like you are there. The Greenglass House is revealed to the reader first as a view of the inn. We see the inside and outside and are able to picture the rooms and the fascinating glass, but as we move through the story, we also see more layers of the Greenglass House. It's almost as if the setting becomes a character. While the history is a mystery that the characters slowly figure out, it is also revealing more of the character of the House. It's definitely interesting and entertaining. I think I should look up some more Milford books.

Perfect read for holiday vacation
By I Do The Speed Limit
Curl up and settle in to your favorite chair by the fireplace or within view of wintry weather outside and get ready to let your imagination run free. Greenglass House is full of beautiful, old-timey charm and folklore. You will be fascinated by a game of imagination brought to life by a cast of characters so real, you think you know them. You will be drawn in by the secrets of many guests that come to visit the extraordinary five story hotel high on a hill overlooking a river.

The hotel is also home for mother, father and adopted son (the main character). And the place is decorated for Christmas.

On every floor of the hotel--especially the attic--you will find treasures to help you solve the mystery of the biggest treasure of all. What is the treasure? Or are there many treasures to be found? Where is the treasure? Inside the hotel or somewhere out on the grounds where a magnificent Winter storm rages?

Taking place at Christmastime, the novel includes subtle (more subtle than Hallmark) lessons on the meaning of the season, love and trust between family and friends, meaningful gifting. Tempers are tamed, disappointments are swallowed graciously and "unusual" visitors are brought into the fold.

Readers of any age can enter into this well-written, colorful, imaginary story and get involved in its pages. I did, and I'm not a "young" adult. Once I realized just how great a holiday story it was, I wished I could put it aside and save it for December reading. I will surely put it out for holiday house guests and I predict it will be well-used before January. I think it is a great choice for young adults!

Great mystery for young readers
By Kat Heckenbach
A great middle grade book for mystery lovers. Milo lives in an inn that often houses smugglers--but never over the Christmas holidays. Milo is looking forward to a quiet Christmas with his parents, until several guests show up the first night of vacation. They each bring with them a unique story, and are all tied to the mysterious past of Greenglass house somehow.

First, I really liked Milo. He is an honest, hardworking kid, but he's still a realistic middle school boy. He's a bit insecure, but meets Meddy, who helps him dig into his imagination and gain some confidence in himself as they work together to solve the mysteries of the guests' missing belongings and mystery behind the house itself.

All the characters are well-developed, unique and quirky. I thought the concept was very cool. On the surface, it's kinda been there, done that-- bunch of people stuck in a big house together with mysterious happenings--but the angle the author took is completely original. There is a lot of lore presented about the house and the town, and done so in a way that keeps it interesting. I also thought it was cool that the author used role playing games in the story. It's something kids can relate to, and kept everything very imaginative.

My favorite thing was the twist, which I had figured out very early on. BUT, that actually made reading the book more fun! A certain character made a certain statement that made me go, "Oh, I bet that means....." and I spent the rest of the book looking for clues to support that. It was really impressive to me how the author kept that perfect balance of clue dropping regarding this particular thing. I don't want to give it away, though, so I won't say anything more :).

Anyway, I definitely recommend this book.

PS--love the cover art!

A captivating and enchanting world I would love to hear more from!
By Linda
Eeep! Another spanking new enchanting world created by the lovely Scarlett Dawn! I have this thing with NA Paranormal Romances. Together with NA Contemporary Romance it is my favorite – but I’ve only came across a handful I genuinely enjoy. The Forever Evermore series is at the very top of that list. So imagine my excitement when I heard SD was participating in a NA Paranormal anthology!

I’m usually not the biggest fan of anthologies, because short stories generally don’t do it for me. Serials are different because the story continues over several volumes. With a short story, that one (oh-so-short) story is usually what you get, and at least for me that is not enough. So after I figured that out I decided to steer clear of anthologies – unless it’s a story from an author I trust. Which is exactly why I’m reviewing this.

…

I loved the introduction to this story. It reminded me a lot of the world of the Forever Evermore series, and that thrilled me to no end (factions, mates, kings and queens are back!). It was an intriguing world I would very much like to hear more from in the future, even if it’s from different characters. I would like to know more about how everything works, more about the different factions and how they live. But at the same time as I felt like the surface was barely scratched, I was also happy I didn’t receive a history lesson I didn’t sign up for. I liked the way we were thrown right into it and learned as we went. But I still think there is lots more to discover and experience, and would love to read more from Valan (yeah, I don’t know how to properly use that word in a sentence…).

What we did learn is that in this world there are eight factions. Four for women and four for men. It said “one created to the likeness of the other, even though ‘matings’ didn’t always occur within a like-to-like faction”. The female factions were: Vampire, Witch, Mermaid and Valkyrie. Male factions: Demon, Warlock, Shifter and Angel. What’s cool is that they’re not as estranged from each other as the Mys factions are in the Forever Evermore series, where mixing is a huge no-no.

This story focused on Lana, who is Valkyrie, and her two love interests. Yup, we’re talking m-f-m. Fair warning – it gets intense! My favorite part of this story was the endless banter between the two love interests. They were very entertaining! The more steamy scenes didn’t hurt either.

The story turned out a lot differently that what my first impression implied (I may have only barely skimmed the blurb). In the first few chapters I got vibes comparable to a mix between the Forever Evermore series and the Dark Elements series (Jennifer L. Armentrout), but it soon turned less innocent and a whole lot raunchier (The Dark Elements is YA).

As SD’s other stories this one sucked me in immediately, and it captivated me all the way to the end. A definite enjoyable read, and I can’t say it enough: I would absolutely love to read more from this world. It’s way too intriguing for this to be it!

Unique Paranormal World
By Carrie Williams
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a super quick, dirty, paranormal read. There's M/F/M action and a bit of introduction to this new world thrown in, too. Overall, I'm intrigued by the world of the Valan.

Lana is an orphan who has a drinking problem. She drinks a lot. It's mentioned a lot in the book. I'm a little conflicted about it, but she's eighteen (so I guess it's not that bad?) and has a troubled life, so she gets some leeway in the story. She's also got a bad habit of making lightning show up. Of course, this isn't normal, but she's never had any other explanation in her life until she stumbles into the world of the Valan, a unique group of all sorts of paranormals. One thing they all have in common, though, is the hunt for their mate.

While attending (and drinking... lots of drinking...), Lana ends up meeting two Kings of their respective races. They're all drawn to one another, despite their different dispositions. Somehow, these three end up finding their way together in a bit of an unconventional way even among the Valan. Lana's siren song manages to bring together the most unlikely of bedmates and even manages to show them the beauty of the human race (I think).

The book itself was a really short read with a little bit of a quickie finish at the end. Will this be a series? I kind of want to see more of this world with all its supernatural inhabitants...

Scarlet Dawn is one of my favorite authors. Her universe building skills are in a rare class with JR Ward, Christine Feehan and Sherrilyn Kenyon. I hope this is the only story we get from this universe.

Proofs Without Words III: Further Exercises in Visual Thinking (Classroom Resource Materials), by Roger B. Nelsen

Proofs without words (PWWs) are figures or diagrams that help the reader see why a particular mathematical statement is true, and how one might begin to formally prove it true. PWWs are not new, many date back to classical Greece, ancient China, and medieval Europe and the Middle East. PWWs have been regular features of the MAA journals Mathematics Magazine and The College Mathematics Journal for many years, and the MAA published the collections of PWWs Proofs Without Words: Exercises in Visual Thinking in 1993 and Proofs Without Words II: More Exercises in Visual Thinking in 2000. This book is the third such collection of PWWs.

The proofs in the book are divided by topic into five chapters: Geometry and Algebra; Trigonometry, Calculus and Analytic Geometry; Inequalities; Integers and Integer Sums; and Infinite Series and Other Topics. The proofs in the book are intended primarily for the enjoyment of the reader, however, teachers will want to use them with students at many levels: high school courses from algebra through precalculus and calculus; college level courses in number theory, combinatorics, and discrete mathematics; and pre-service and in-service courses for teachers.

Fisher Stanton, Valley High School’s Nantucket wannabe, has a cheating girlfriend. When he hires Darcy Walker to chase her to a local club, in true Darcy fashion she stumbles upon a dead body. Thing is, this body has secrets...and Darcy’s mysterious friend, Jaws, and the reporter, Tito Westbrook, have a vested interest. Both enlist Darcy to find the person responsible who has eluded them for years, but Darcy doesn’t solve crimes for free anymore--especially where Jaws is concerned. Knowing Darcy’s Achilles heel, Jaws blackmails Darcy into working for him.

In a true test of wills, Darcy and Jaws battle head-to-head—Jaws needs Darcy to help him end a bitter grudge war; Darcy needs Jaws to divulge the mystery surrounding her mother’s death. Haunted by a past that shapes her present, Darcy will stop at nothing to get answers. Even if it means breaking the law and being disloyal to her new boyfriend, Dylan Taylor, in the process.

DEFCON DARCY gives Darcy’s demons a name and ties up loose ends that make Darcy into the verb that she is. What she thinks she knows as truth, isn’t. What she wishes wasn’t true…is.

The problem is, when your life goes DEFCON 1, not everyone lives to tell about it.

A. J. Lape has just destroyed me...
By ~justine of Bex 'n' Books
A. J. Lape has just destroyed me.
Seriously, hands down, the BEST writing I have read in the last YEAR.
There is not a word to describe how of one swoop, she has touched on every emotion. In one night, I was hysterical with both laughter and devastation. And I was not even finished yet. A. J. ‘s books are ALWAYS good, but I actually choked on my spit gasping and giggling at the same time.
Utterly amazing writing.

Breath of fresh air
By Lavinia Urban (Author)
I can not honestly remember how I came across reading this series but I remember after reading the first book I needed to get it on paperback.
The whole series is so different from what I normally read but I have to say that this book is in a league of its own.
Darcy Walker is a character that I love. She acts without thinking and can get bored so easily.
On the outside Darcy can come across as having a hard shell but on the inside is a scared and insecure girl. In this book we get to see this vulnerability really show.
There are so many questions answered in this book.
I cried - a lot - with this book. I cried because of what was going on, what Darcy was saying, when Dylan cried. Now let me tell you about Dylan. At the beginning of this entire series I was not his biggest fan. In fact he annoyed the heck out of me because I thought of him as a control freak but after reading this series..... wow. I wanted to give him a hug and tell him everything will be okay.I wanted to hug Darcy and tell her not to worry and that she is a brave girl.
Ivy I wanted to shake. Seriously the girl annoys me but this book made me pity her.
Jagger made me think ooooo scary.
Ben.... well Ben.... what a fantastic character.
This series is truly one of the best series I have read in my lifetime. The author seems to have poured her heart and soul into this book and after every book I always wonder how she could top the last. This book was no exception.
Honestly I am sitting here now, after reading it, and wondering what to do next.
Darcy's world is truly a place you want to be part of. You can easily get lost in her world.
Thank you A.J Lape for this fantastic series. I series that I don't want to end and a series I would love to see as a movie.

Darcy really took me for a ride in this one!
By Amber Goleb
As all of the other books, I freaking heart Darcy! I am not going to give my full review right now... That will come during the blog tour... but I will give you some of my thoughts right now.
This book, like the others, are super funny. Unlike the other books, it also ripped my heart at in parts. Literally ripped my heart out. I was not expecting tears, other than joyous ones, in this book.
I love that AJ uses her imagination. You not only feel like you are inside Darcy's brain, but you are able to feel like you are Darcy. You find yourself lost in her thoughts and actions.
I think the thing I love about this series the most is that these are books that not only can I enjoy, but my children also. Between the kid-friendly content and the extensive imagination that takes you to places beyond reality (which is what a book is supposed to do), this series is a winner all of the way around!

Official Review from the blog....
AJ Lape has brought many laughs and giggles with the first three books in this series. She did the same in this book, however she throw a cookie at me in this one. She drenched me in hot coffee and burned me with some series tears too! I was not expected the tears. The sadness and pity I felt for Darcy in this book is extremely heavy.

This book isn't like the other books. Sure, there are dead bodies falling out of walls. Sure there is Darcy's brothers coming to her aid. And yes, Dylan. What I didn't expect was not only the depths of the back-story of Darcy's mother, but I didn't expect things to go to where they went.

The second half of this book ripped my heart out. I sobbed like a baby, true story. I had to force myself to read it because it was so heavy. I was afraid of where AJ was going to take Darcy. I wanted to read it with my eyes closed... But that wasn't possible. I cringed a lot. I prayed a lot that no harm came to Darcy. To say this book shocked me is an understatement!

This book isn't all serious. We have Bean and some twerking. We have cheating girlfriends. Darcy attracts more male suiters. Darcy questions her relationship with Dylan to the point she drives him even more crazy. There is the "usual" plus more seriousness than we have yet to have.

Oh, I can't forget... Dodge Charger man... We finally get our answers. Yes, you read that right!!!

If you haven't started this series, you really should. The best part of this series, aside from the laughs, is that it is marketable for ALL ages. This is something your twelve year old can read and enjoy; it is something any adult can read and enjoy. You don't come across many books or series that are perfect for all age groups!

When Annie's mom snags a gig as makeup artist to a teen movie idol and finagles a spot for Annie to accompany her on his European promotional tour, Annie's pretty sure she'll be fangirling over architectural sights rather than teen heartthrob Graham Cabot.

But then of course she actually meets him. As Graham and Annie fall for each other in the most romantic cities in the world, Annie realizes that this turn of events may not be quite as glamorous as she thought. Instead of red carpets and celebrity couple names, they are navigating a minefield of keeping secrets from Graham's fans, overprotective assistant, stage "momager," and beefy bodyguard. And when the paparazzi make an appearance, Annie has to decide whether their love is worth the harsh glare of the flashbulb.

Author Jen Malone draws on her real-life experiences as a movie studio publicist to bring you an insider peek at love, Hollywood-style.

Meh.
By Jennifer
I wish I could say that I liked Map To the Stars, but it fell so flat for me that I tripped over it on the sidewalk. Terrible analogy but accurate all the same.

Lemme just give you a list of all the reasons this book didn’t work for me:

Insta-love done poorly. When Annie and Graham aka the Movie Star first meet, he assumes she’s a fangirl that’s managed to weasel her way into his hotel room before he gets there. Their later interactions suggest that they just have so much spark they fired off at each other the first time they met. You know that story: boy and girl dislike each other and lash out, only to later realize how much they lurv each other and that’s why they lashed out. Besides the whole “I like you so I’m going to treat you like crap” trope that I am SO TIRED OF, it’s just overplayed and in this case, completely unbelievable.
Mom and Annie left Georgia for #reasons (that were stupid). I began to suspect, not too far into the novel, why Annie and her mother just uprooted and left their home and I told myself if I was right, I was going to be really mad. And I was right. But since the big reveal isn’t until the last 10% of the book or so, I felt like I may as well finish it out so I could at least get another completed book in my Goodreads challenge. Yep, that’s right. I finished it for the numbers. I didn’t finish it because I liked it or anything crazy like that. Anyway, I digress. The reason was stupid and lacked any sort of believability at all. No mother is going to uproot her kid during senior year of high school because of such a minor thing. You know what would have been more believable? If mom left to take this job and Annie stayed with Dad. That actually makes sense to me, but that wouldn’t have worked for an author who was looking for a plot device to get her prince and pauper together. Eye roll.
Annie and Graham were soooooooooooooo melodramatic. One minute they hated each other and the next they were kissy-kissy, and then again hated each other. Graham tells her he can’t be seen with her, and then takes her out. She tells him she’s tired of his crap, and then smoochies with him. Yeah, I guess that’s actually typical of some teenage emotion, but when paired with the rest of the story, it just was blah.
The ending was too neat. All this drama and everything ends just perfectly (sorry not sorry for that spoiler). I like when not every single thing is easy for characters. Yes, even in HEAs.
I actually did enjoy all the backstage scenes, because, whether or not that was real, they lent a bid of credibility to Graham’s lifestyle and story. And there were some really funny quotes in there – if Map To the Stars did anything well, it was funny at times.

“I’m a producer. You ever try to talk a neurotic actor off an emotional cliff? They’re nearly as bad as writers. I’m basically one hissy fit short of earning Dr. Phil status at this point in the game.”
So, look, Map To the Stars wasn’t a terribly awful book. Some readers who are looking for a teen romance with some Hollywood thrown in for fun might actually like this. It’s made for hot summer days on a beach, but it’s also a book you wouldn’t be upset if it got sand in the spine or wet from splashes…or drowned in the ocean altogether. I am highly critical of contemporary romances, teen or not, so just take my opinion with a grain of salt… and a side of margarita.

I received this book from the publisher for review purposes.

Quick, satisfying contemporary YA of first love and self-discovery!
By Katie O'Sullivan
What a fun contemporary YA romance! Yes, the premise of the movie star falling for the nobody narrator is a cliche at this point, but Jen Malone does it so well, and adds such realistic details that it made it such fun to read! The first person POV is both fresh and refreshing as her small town heroine gets her first taste of Hollywood, making a mess of things along the way.

Annie Shelton grew up in Georgia, so far from the bright lights of LA that she was never interested in tabloid gossip or crushing on hot movie stars. Her best friend Wynn was the total opposite and a great counterpoint to Annie's hard focus on reality. When Annie and her mom move out to California, its not to pursue dreams, but to escape the reality of her father's deception.

Graham Cabot grew up in LA-LA-land, on screen from an early age, and now a genuine movie star at seventeen. Girls throw themselves at him all the time, but the real Graham is actually a little shy and insecure. He admits to Annie that he's never had a real girlfriend, hasn't even had real friends since his elementary school years, before the fame and fortune changed his life.

Their budding relationship is cute and sweet, and the one-POV storytelling has the reader riding along with Annie's confusion at Graham's shifting attitudes and emotions. I won't give away any more of the story except to say the ending is totally satisfying and everything worked out the way I wanted it to. This is a standalone read, no series or setup for the next book, which I also found refreshing. Quick, satisfying contemporary YA romance of first love and self discovery that I can totally recommend!

Map to fun, starry-eyed teens
By Pete Tarsi
I don’t read a lot of YA romance novels.

Let me clarify: I read a lot of YA books that have romance in them, and I’ve written flirty, romantic sequences in my own books. But I tend to gravitate more towards books that have something else (a contemporary issue or a fantasy/speculative/magical-realism element) driving the story with the romance being a subplot. Jen Malone’s Map to the Stars very well may be the first strictly YA romance novel I’ve ever read. After all, I’m a forty-something-year-old man and thus probably not the target audience.

I picked up a copy for my Kindle on the strength of the humor in the first chapter when it was read by the author at a YA book-reading event I went to. My daughters found the notion of a movie star getting a facial of nightingale poop to be utterly hysterical. And it is. The Hollywood satire peppered throughout the book made me laugh heartily enough to overcome occasional eye-rolls at main character Annie’s early waffling back and forth regarding her feelings for teen heartthrob Graham Cabot.

So here’s the basic plot: Annie’s mother has moved her out to L.A. (from a small town in Georgia) to be a stylist to the stars, and they get assigned to Graham Cabot’s worldwide promotional tour for his latest movie. Back home, Annie’s best friend Wynn is a huge Graham Cabot fangirl, but Annie’s first run-in with him is a total disaster. She lumps him together with all the other Hollywood phonies, he flirts a little, she flirts back but questions his motives, he turns out to be a really sweet guy. Romance ensues.

Okay, so maybe there are some signs of the “dreaded” insta-love going on, but you know what? Big deal! I was a teenager once, and I remember getting tingles if a pretty girl innocently and platonically touched my arm, and I remember suddenly deciding I loved them. And I know girls feel that way too—I had enough female friends that at one point wrote out their names with their crush’s last name attached. Insta-attraction—or better yet, insta-interest—happens in the real world. Love—all emotions—are irrational. Teens—well, most people—behave irrationally at times. And this is a fun story or two teens—one that’s normal but skeptical and one that’s airbrushed but sheltered and seeking normalcy—finding each other and just trying to have fun and do the things teens do.

Teens make mistakes, and Annie and Graham make some big ones along the way. Because he’s in the spotlight, being seen in public with a regular girl could harm his image. Or it could alienate his fan base of tween and teen girls that want to be writing his last name after theirs. That’s the main conflict for about the second half of the book, and it was fun watching them try to have a relationship, even though I correctly predicted the consequences they’d face.

Annie and Graham are likeable enough lead, and the book has a solid supporting cast. Though Wynn’s appearances are limited to emails and video chats, she’s well developed and a lot of fun. Bodyguard Roddy, who’s in on the couple’s ruses, has some nice hidden layers to him. Annie’s mom is well-balanced between supportive and overprotective, and her producer-friend Joe is an absolute riot whenever he appears.

The book is filled with pop culture references, as it should be when partially satirizing Hollywood and online-trending, but they don’t stick to one particular era. Some have stood or will stand the test of time, but some others are contemporary that may not. And some of them were from when I was a teen, including a Grease 2 reference that I didn’t quite believe both characters would get.

There’s no surprise that there’s a HEA ending, as that’s required for the genre, but I found it ironic after all the Hollywood satirizing that the ending was so Hollywood-ized. The only thing missing from the typical Hollywood-made teen romantic comedy ending was someone in the crowd starting a slow clap.

Overall, the satire is funny, the characters are fun, their chemistry is believable, and the ending is satisfying. No new ground is broken, but there’s nothing wrong with comfort food (like the cookies Annie’s Mom bakes), and this is an enjoyable, fun, light read. No map necessary for it to find its FOUR STARS.
