a must for CT registry

I recently took the ARRT exam for CT, I utilized this book for studying....it was invaluble!! Most cross sectional anatomy books mix CT with MRI images, this book contains CT images only. I highly recommend anyone cross training to CT or already in CT to pick up a copy, its nice and compact too.

Definitely a step up from prior edition

I have browsed/read the previous edition of Gail Damerow's book, but in this one I discovered information that was not in the older one. For example, the information about types of predators and how to identify them was of particular interest to me, since one of my young chickens was eaten by a "mystery animal." This book is great as either a book to read through or as a handbook (which I am using it as). There's also good guidelines on making your own feed. Every chicken keeper must own this book!

The Definitive Guide to Raising Chickens

Well I haven't read that many books on raising chickens, but this book seems to be THE guide to have. Every subject you can imagine is covered. However, I think the breed selection section could be better. The other book I have is Keeping Chickens, which has terrific pictures and descriptions of the most popular breeds available. Like I said in the review of that book: a marriage of the two books would be perfect. If you're looking for a detailed reference book about raising chickens this is definitely the book for you.

Not for backyard chicken keepers

This book is written for people who plan to keep large flocks and focus on productivity. There are little edits here and there to accommodate the growing masses of people keeping a few hens in their backyard, but that's in the form of asides like, '...but if you only have a few chickens you probably won't have this problem.'

My favorite example was in the discussion of diseases. There's a long section about how to recognize various diseases, how to treat them, and so on. At the end, the author comments that not every chicken death is attributable to a disease, and finding a dead chicken or two every now and again is no reason for panic. I plan to have 3 or 4 chickens. If two dropped dead, that would be half of my flock, and i would definitely panic.

If you plan to run a large flock, this book will be very valuable. It has a great deal of information on good laying breeds, good meat breeds, and so on. It discusses diseases, infections, and how to tell what kind of predator killed your bird by what bits you find left on the ground.

However, if you plan to keep a few chickens as layers and pets, and don't want to be told that you should send them off for slaughter after they pass their prime laying years (about age 2), you might not get what you want or need from this book. It's full of admonitions against mixing breeds, mixing age groups, and so on that are important in large flocks but manageable in smaller ones. If you plan to name your chickens, i highly recommend skipping this book and getting A Chicken in Every Yard: The Urban Farm Store's Guide to Chicken Keeping instead. It's oriented toward people keeping a few chickens in their urban or suburban back yard, and has no chapters on how to slaughter a chicken.

good presentation on a hard topic, but outdated

The title more or less covers the idea -- the book is well written. Steidel presents the topics in a way the reader can absorb the material without feeling overwhelmed by the math involved. The book covers only introductory material, also including multi degree of freedom systems, continuous systems, and random vibrations. There are numerous GOOD examples and over 500 exercises, which is a lot for a textbook of this type. Sadly, no computer applications are presented in the book, this edition being from 1989, and should any new edition be in the works, it MUST contain computer applications to be of any use. Not using computers limits the student to working with 2 degree of freedom systems, no more. I'd suggest this book as backup for other more advanced and up to date books that do include modern applications but lack the thorough explanations in Steidel's book. The reader might like to check my comments on Thomson's Vibration book.

In Queer in Russia Laurie Essig examines the formation of gay identity and community in the former Soviet Union. As a sociological fieldworker, she began her research during the late 1980s, before any kind of a public queer identity existed in that country. After describing accounts of pre-perestroika persecution, Essig examines the more recent state of sexual identities in Russia. Although the fall of communism brought new freedom to Russian queers, there are still no signs of a mass movement forming around the issue, and few identify themselves as lesbians or gay men, even when they are involved in same-sex relations. Essig does reveal, however, vibrant manifestations of gay life found at the local level—in restaurants, discos, clubs, and cruising strips, in newspapers, journals, literature, and the theater. Concluding with a powerful exploration of the surprising affinities between some of Russia’s most prominent nationalists and its queers, Queer in Russia fills a gap in both Russian and cultural studies.

Queer in Russia is an engrossing and highly readable sociological study that will disturb readers who hoped or assumed that President Yeltsin's 1993 decriminalization of consensual sex between adults of the same sex would unlock the Iron Closet. Since 1917, homosexuality has officially existed in Russia only as a legal or medical category, either a criminal act or an illness. Russian men and women who experience same-sex desire have so internalized the various proscriptions of society and the law that they are hardly rushing to proclaim themselves gay, Laurie Essig found, let alone unfurl the rainbow flag. Many are happier viewing themselves as transsexuals--simply born into the wrong bodies--than as violators of Russia's rigidly gendered behavioral codes, and others are too strongly nationalistic to embrace what is widely considered a Western liberation movement. Incidentally, Essig discloses both an exquisitely lyrical Russian alternative to the term queer--"people of the moonlight"--and a creepy clinical designation for lesbianism--"sluggishly manifesting schizophrenia"--a phrase that (happily) has no equivalent outside the former Soviet Union. --Regina Marler

Drawing on the conventions of postmodern critical theory and cultural studies, sociologist and journalist Essig investigates issues of sexual identity and community in the former Soviet Union. Her brief overview of Russian attitudes toward same-sex activity reveals that laws criminalizing homosexual behavior were passed in 1716, repealed by the Bolsheviks, reinstated by Stalin and abolished again in 1993, and that jail or psychiatric institutionalization were not uncommon penalties. Essig's broader project is to reveal how the very concepts of "law," "cure" and "sexual identity" are constructed generally and in Russia. Using the theoretical work of Foucault, Judith Butler, J?rgen Habermas and Pierre Bourdieu, as well as personal interviews and reportage on the activities of gay social and political groups, Essig paints an engaging and perceptive portrait of a community emerging from the underground and struggling to define itself. She is adroit at discussing how the globalization of Western gay identity is received in post-Soviet Russian culture, particularly how the concept of "coming out" is difficult in a society in which any "public self-confession" has been politically dangerous. While Essig has the unflinching eyes and ears of a seasoned reporter, the book's deep grounding in theory may diminish its appeal for some readers. Illustrations not seen by PW. (July)

Decent

Although this was a great book that quickly summarizes detailed and complex topics of organic chemistry; there is at a least one error that can really lead the reader astray. My example is the definition of aromatic compounds. The book states that cyclooctatetraene is an anti-aromatic compound. However, this is only true if cyclooctatetraene is planar. Unfortunately, cyclooctatetraene can shift out of plane thus making it non-aromatic. This little error isn't too bad but it can screw you over on a test. In summary, I believe this book is helpful in COMPLEMENTING your primary textbook.

Not very impressed with this book. I'm taking organic 2 in the summer so I was excited that I would have this book to go along with the class. It is not as good as the first organic for dummies book. The author's don't use helpful analogies to help you remember things like the organic 1 for dummies author did. Some of the concepts are still very difficult to understand. I wish they "dumbed" it down a little more.

'Organic Chemistry II For Dummies'

I read most of the ratings for these, and then purchased them for my daughter for her second semester organic chemistry, since the first semester was such a struggle for her. She says they are helpful, and she also uses them as a reference to get a perspective on a topic that is different than what the professor may have presented in class. I know it was a gamble when I purchased them if she would use them at all, so I was pleased that she does and so it was worth it!

This book is about the large number of other exits - the ones that are not driven by the VCs. Exit opportunities have changed dramatically in the past few years. Today, it's more likely that a company will be sold without ever having an investment from a venture capitalist. Exits are also happening much earlier than before. The largest number of exit transactions today are in the under $30-million valuation range. These exits are often completed when companies are only two or three years from startup. The goal of this book is to help entrepreneurs and angel investors have more successful, more frequent and more profitable exits.

Fascinating Insights

The author does a terrific job describing the value of early exits to investment returns and improving the odds of a successful liquidity event.

His insight that you should secure alignment from the very beginning on your exit strategy among the founders and early investors is invaluable. As he points out, most boards and management teams miss the opportunity to secure their maximum valuation because they are too focused on their day to day efforts, do not think to sell until business growth falters and do not appreciate how long the sale process can take.

Most startling was his description of the inherent conflicts of interest between VC investors vs entrepreneurs and angel investors. It is perfectly obvious once he explains the underlying business models but it was a new distinction for me.

The research done on the outcomes of companies that take VC funds is also interesting. For example, VC investments increase the likelihood of firm failure as the VC investment model requires them to block profitable early sales in order to compel a try for the much less likely 30x multiples. They also bring a likely delay of 10 years or more to the exit.

The book is well organized and written by a subject matter expert whose industry presentations posted to YouTube are well worth your time. I highly recommend this book for any founders or angel investors looking to improve the odds of a successful exit for their effort and risk.

Excellent read for entrepreneurs

This is also a time when large companies have lots of cash. Large companies know they are not good at innovation. Their greatest skill is growing businesses from values in the tens of millions to values in the hundreds of millions. Large companies also have to grow. They believe the best way to accelerate their growth is to acquire exciting young companies.

This book makes a great rational case for smaller

This is a tremendous book that provides a clear insight into a strategy that more (technology) entrepreneurs should adopt. Not every business needs to be "venture fundable". Venture funding has it's own downsides, notably the divergence of the entrepreneurs interests and those of the VC investor. This book makes a great rational case for smaller, more "exit-able" businesses.
