Delivers substantial value and it is very easy to understand and implement

This book is alot more powerful than it appears at first glance of the overall book. Although I write about many things this book discusses, I like this book because it gets right to the point, with sufficient detail to make the point AND have people do the homework and implementation easily. It does it far more efficiently than my many pieces on related subjects trying to have my readers understand and motivate them to do something.

And it results in tangible effects in each of of the 14 days.

I will be recommending the book to my readers as a way to catapult themselves forward into getting the benefits, which are:

1. To feel calmer, more peaceful, despite what is going on.
2. To clear your mind, so that you can use your higher brain (to see what is going on more clearly and to solve problems).
3. To identify and challenge and resolve the beliefs that pop up to create the undesirable emotions and stresses.
4. To identify and replace effectively those iceberg (core underlying) beliefs that you've been operating on since you were 10 years old.
5. To get unstuck (get out of the revolving treadmill).

Stephen Barrett, M.D., has been investigating and writing about consumer health issues for more than 40 years. His Quackwatch website serves as a clearinghouse for information on health frauds and quackery. He serves as Vice President of the Institute for Science and Medicine, is a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, edits Consumer Health Digest, and is a peer-review panelist for several top medical journals.

Harriet Hall, M.D., a retired family physician and colonel, served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. Her administrative positions included Chief of Clinic Services and Director of Base Medical Services. She now devotes her time to investigating questionable health claims and writing and lecturing about pseudoscience, quackery, "alternative medicine," and critical thinking. She is a contributing editor to both Skeptical Inquirer and Skeptic magazines and a founding member and editor of the Science-Based Medicine blog.

Robert S. Baratz, M.D., D.D.S., Ph.D., an expert on quality of care, is President and Medical Director of South Shore Health Care in Braintree, Massachusetts, where he practices internal, oral, and occupational medicine. He serves on the medical faculties of Boston University and Tufts University and is used as a consultant by many regulatory and law enforcement agencies.

William M. London, Ed.D., M.P.H., is a health educator and professor in the Department of Public Health at California State University, Los Angeles. A science-based aid to clear thinking

For the consumer (such as I) lacking knowledge in medical matters and perplexed, as I have been, by the question of how to assess the current avalanche of health claims and supplements on the internet, in health food shops, in pharmacies and in print, this book is a must-read.

Similar to Dr. Paul Offit's off-putting experience with today's health-care system that he describes in the prologue to his Do You Believe in Magic?: The Sense and Nonsense of Alternative Medicine, my own experience with standard medecine in the past 20-odd years has been likewise a very mixed bag. I have twice faced cancer and survived by submitting to the standard treatments: once for colorectal cancer (stage 3) which meant surgery, chemo, and radiation - the infamous "cut, burn, poison" trilogy - and once for bladder cancer: surgery and chemo. Survive I did; but those remedies came with almost intolerable side effects that made me indifferent, for a time, as to whether I lived or died.

Should some other illness afflict me once more in the future, is there not, I wondered, a way to restored health that's not as brutal? Can there be therapies through unconventional medicine that are gentler, more bearable, but achieve the same objective?

Apparently not. Reading this book taught me this reality: _all_ therapies, not only the conventional "allopathic" ones that we love to hate, must necessarily be held to the same high standard of proof, the test of science, failing which -- to borrow Offit's words -- we'll be hoodwinked at a point in life when we are sick and most vulnerable, by healers who ask us to believe in them rather than in the science that fails to support their claims.

The book "Consumer Health" lists those failures. Is that an instance of "bias", as some commenters have charged? Indeed yes, it _is_ bias, and it is a good and responsible thing, this bias, because it is bias against health care providers telling patients things that are not true, presenting opinions as if they were facts. That bias is a precious service to the public.

I find the book to be a science-based aid that treats of these matters in some detail and helps to classify for the consumer's own protection the huge assortment of healing promotions modalities and nostrums that fall into the scientifically failed category that may alternatively be designated as wishful or magic thinking.

Bottom line: if you value your health, read this book.

Platform Scale is a Fantastic Theoretical and Pragmatic Guide to Building the Companies of The Future

Personal Background & Summary
While Platform Scale is accessible to anyone interested in technology and how new businesses are being formed, I have always found it helpful to know the reviewers background in online reviews. In this case, I am a growth equity technology investor that is highly familiar with the concepts brought up in Platform Scale. I live and breath technology and my ability to succeed at my job depends on my understanding of technology-based businesses. With that said, this book provided incredible theoretical clarity to a number of concepts I had understood intuitively/pragmatically and has allowed me to more broadly apply these concepts across different business lines that may be in need of disruption. As a collaborator with the author on this project, I've done my best to give my objective perspective on Platform Scale, who should read it, and why it is (most assuredly) a worthwhile investment of your time.

Section 1 - Introduction to Interaction First Businesses
This section is fundamentally about bringing readers up to speed on several common concepts (Aggregation, Means of Distribution, Methods of Interaction, Role of Producers & Consumers, Network Effects, Data as Currency) that businesses operating at platform scale utilize in radically different ways than prior enterprises. Depending on your previous knowledge level and understanding of (primarily) Silicon Valley-based platform businesses (Uber, AirBnB, Facebook), you may already be aware of the mechanisms described at a superficial level, but not at the granularity of how those concepts translate into business processes. The author explores these concepts and how value is created through the idea of Pipes (linear value movement) and Platforms (bi or multi-directional value movement). The most valuable part of Section 1 lies in Chapter 5, where the key drivers of Platform Scale are described, as the author does a great job of relating previously known economic drivers with radically new opportunities based primarily on technological trends. Overall, Section 1 is a great primer as to how and why Platform Scale businesses have, almost magically and with great rapidity, become extremely competitive with previously hard-to-disrupt command and control corporations.

Section 2 - Designing the Interaction First Platform
The second section explores how to best build an interaction-first platform from the ground up, which use cases must be accounted for, where friction might be encountered, and how value will/should be created. At its core, this section describes how platforms should have a central principle of value that is easily understood, and upon which others can create additional drivers of value. While Chapter 1 gets bogged down in complex analogies in what I believe are attempts to simplify highly intricate ideas, read on as Chapter 2 describes perhaps one of the most important ideas of the entire Book, the Core Value Unit and how it powers the massive value creation of new platform businesses. The CVU and the closely connected concepts of Curation and Interaction Flows are also explored in detailed, and add necessary concrete context and examples to how one might go about designing the next Platform Scale business.

Section 3 - Building the Interaction First Platform
The third section is about one concept: execution. How does one build a PS scale business from a management perspective? Chapter 1 is a strong summary of the concepts (Interaction Space, Production Incentives, Long Term Value Creation, Curation Mechanisms, Ownable Interactions) later explored in depth. From a personal perspective, the most interesting discussion revolves around how to lock-in users in what are, by design, "open" platforms that encourage movement amongst users and producers. The corollary to this is how to utilize friction, either naturally present or artificially created, to increase the overall value of the platform. The case studies towards the end of the platform are instructive in illustrating potential avenues of dysfunction, but I question the broader applicability of the specific lessons learned here, as we in the very early stages of understanding how platforms work (this book definitively advancing our overall knowledge set).

Section 4 - Solving the Chicken or the Egg Problem
The fourth section explores the old-as-time problem of creating a two-sided interaction from scratch in the context of the very new platform scale business. Instead of suggesting concrete ways of juicing the marketplace, which I would have discounted as likely too specific to be broadly applicable, the author instead takes the stronger path of prioritizing theoretical approaches to sparking interaction. Of the concepts presented, the most salient is likely the staged value creation approach, which the author presents concisely in a case study of OpenTable.

Section 5 - Virality - Scale in a Networked World
Once you have solved for Section 4, i.e. the positive feedback loop is self-sustaining, how do you increase the rate at which it interacts? Section 5 describes two main strategies, several temporary (Termed "Bumps") and several that are more sustainable (Termed "Engines"). The author's deconstruction in Chapter 4 of virality in comparison to contagious diseases is both humorous and incredibly informative. For those that are familiar with the Lean Startup movement and its startup canvas, the author's Viral Canvas's and corresponding examples were extremely helpful in clarifying the concepts presented.

Section 6 - Reverse Network Effect
In The Who's song, Won't Get Fooled Again, there is a line, "Meet the new boss, Same as the old boss." As the author sums up, I can't help but agree that while the creation of big command and control corporations may be ending, the creation of enormous platform-scale ecosystems is just beginning. Given that is the case, and that many platforms are currently subsidizing their value creation for both users and producers, the author's focus on how to scale value without significant amounts of capital is apropos. Finally, Platform Scale ends with a discussion of some of the problems associated with platform scale business and how to best approach them, which will surely make this required reading amongst management at platform scale businesses when funding for subsidized value creation becomes scarce.

Summary
Overall, Platform Scale is a fantastic exploration of the steps required to build platform scale businesses and ensure they are self-sustaining. More importantly, this book also prepares the reader for the platform scale businesses of the future by discussing the theoretical and abstract components of PS ecosystems. Despite some unnecessarily complex examples in specific sections, the author manages to maintain consistent tone and quality throughout what is an ambitious look at where business is likely headed. While PS is most applicable to business managers, investors, and those interested in technology, I also believe the book is illuminating to those that seek to understand how the world works in general, as the principles discussed herein will power a significant portion of the business world, and society, going forward.

Rich with patterns and models derived from hundreds of examples of consumer platforms

Platform Scale stands out among other works on Platforms so far. Sangeet Choudary has proved that the unique style of presenting complex and tough material as simple, clear concepts can only happen when the author lives and breathes the stuff. The principles of design of platforms and modern businesses come to life with the examples he covers throughout the book. These businesses are consumer businesses that are changing the daily routines of people around the world. Yet, there are not many articles or books that cover them with the comprehensive thought process on how they might be built. Sangeet's book fills the gaps in existing literature and also challenges established works to bring more contemporary and futuristic businesses as examples to the table for discussion. It is tempting to ask Sangeet to satisfy the Software engineers who provide the backbone to most of the digital platforms in his future work. But his mission is clear when he says that he chose to write the book for startups and entrepreneurs dreaming to build platforms of the future. The book does justice not only to his target audience but also to any student of business who is curious to grasp the emerging trends in consumer platforms. I strongly recommend this work as a must read for anyone to get to the core of changes happening in businesses and industries around them, throughout the world.

nice overview

I am totally new to the semiconductor industry and this book seems like a good introduction to dive in.

As a process integration engineer knowledge of semiconductor processes is critical and this book seemed like a good first step for people with no background.

It has chapters ranging from semiconductor processes to reliability physics.

Agreed there are a few grammatical errors here and there but the knowledge is rich.

Fictional author/sleuth Fletcher, in New York City on a book tour, witnesses the apparent murder of an old acquaintance from her hometown of Cabot Cove, ME. Her involvement leads her to corrupt police, drug deals, mistaken identities, and more murders--as well as intense media attention and even a brief stay in a jail cell. Characters are interesting and well developed although the mystery loses its momentum before the end. While a few of Beth Porter's New York accents are overdone, most are believable, and her Maine accents are convincing as she maintains the integrity of the characters through her presentation of their vocal personalities. There's lots of New York atmosphere, too. A light, enjoyable mystery without much depth. Recommended for larger collections.

This is one great book!

For anyone who likes mysteries, this book is for you. It's suspenful yet light-hearted all at the same time. I promise you that this book won't be a dissapointment. You should read it.

Reminisce with this nice alternative to the famous series

Jessica B. Fletcher, the famous character of the mystery writer from Cabot Cove played by Angela Lansbury, needs no introduction. After the TV series came to an end, fans have a new opportunity to further share into the lives of all those beloved characters through this saga of mystery novels.
The first installment, "Manhattans & murder" was published for the Christmas season of 1994. Jessica is in New York for Christmas, doing what most famous authors do when in this city: promoting a new novel through numerous book signings, cocktail parties, TV and radio interviews, etc. The book jumps right in: during her own Christmas shopping spree Jessica happens upon an old acquaintance from Cabot Cove. The man, who goes by the name of Waldo Morse, is working for charity as a Santa Claus on Fifth Avenue . Although Jessica hasn't seen him in years, she remembers that it was rumored back then he'd had to "bolt" from his own wife and children because of some involvement with drug dealers. When her friend recognizes her he tenses up, and asks her to come the next day to talk. But what she witnesses the next day is his murder - or is it? Things are never as they seem and Jessica, who has the curiosity of a cat, is determined to find out what's going on no matter what. For the purpose she disguises her personality, hires a private car, and goes to the most decrepit places in New York (spying from the security of a limousine, of course). Murder is always close to Jessica, who has to deal with an arrogant detective of not too good a fame.
Far from being a particularly interesting plot, it does give a good insight of the dark world of the Federal Witness Protection Program and the NYPD. The setting, however, is wonderfully cozy, making some of us (like me, aspiring writer), do a lot of wishful thinking about the wonderful social life, all the media attention and the stays at wonderful hotels that are a common lifestyle for V.I.P.'s the world over. Even though this is not an extremely good beginning, the book will very much appeal to fans of the show, who will recognize Jessica's friends Dr. Seth Hazlitt and Sheriff Morton Metzger, who are always on hand to accompany Jessica wherever she goes.
Mystery fans and future writers the world over will find in Jessica B. Fletcher a "model", who is always groomed to perfection, intelligent, independent, shrewd and surrounded by the most important people.
